For the Canadian models there is only a piece of dashboard trim that was changed to gloss black.
I think the 28i got new wheels too... |

The changes were mostly electronics stuff e.g. ecopro, start-stop, lane departure etc. but nothing in body design so they would look virtually the same. Other than rim/wheels I don't think you could tell one year from the other if you saw them on the road.

BMW does not make significant/visible changes to models from one production year to another. Only when the LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) models come along are the changes visible. This usually comes around 4-5 years into the 7 year model life.
That's calendar years rather than crazy 'model years', so we might expect an LCI X3 to be unveiled in calendar 2014/5. It can come earlier. The first gen 1 series LCI came out in 2007, less than 3 calendar years after its introduction in summer 04. The 1er was a totally new produce line though and was not without its teething problems, the LCI was also the test bed for efficient dynamics technologies (I have a late 2007 118d LCI which was the original Efficient Dynamics model)
