US Trailer Hitch Receiver?
Anyone know if there's a trailer hitch receiver on the US model? Looking to use my Yakima bike rack, if possible. I don't recall reading anything, didn't get anything in searches, and can't seem to see any indication of a removable tab on the rear bumper.

I have ordered it on my car, and all I know so far is that the hitch is electrically operated and swings out from underneat the car, so there's nothing giving it away when it's hidden.. I have no idea if You can get this option in the US however..

I was told the trailer hitch receiver would be available in March. The dealer figured the installed price would be around $1,300. I am also waiting for pricing and availability of the iPad holder.

I'm quite keen on the iPad holder too. Any idea if it will have power and how difficult it will be to hook it up if it does have power?

The only info I have is from the X3 APP I downloaded for my iPad. It shows the holder attached to the back of the front seat and there is a power cable attached to the iPad. I can only hope it is for power. Maybe in Europe, you guys may be able to surf the Internet using the vehicle "antenna".

The accessories brochure shows the electric banana (as I call the fold-out model) but also suggests that the vehicle will take a regular hitch. My dealer says they have no ratings for the hitch yet and that they don't expect news on it until April. I don't want the banana, just a regular hitch so that I can use a trailer hitch bike rack, but my dealer is stalling--no doubt wants to try to sell me the $1300 banana. We tow our boats and ride our bikes year-round here in Florida! C'mon!

Is Execuhitch an Option for the New X3?
Has anyone checked out Execuhitch (www.execuhitch.com) as a US solution to the X3 trailer hitch issue? I have a Draw-Tight hitch on my Lexus RX-400h, but it is truly ugly. If we didn't tow our jet ski and horse trailers with it, I'd tear it off in a heartbeat. Execuhitch looks fantastic and reasonably priced ($700), but I don't want to be the guinea pig for it.
BTW, my 2001 X5 has a beatifully integrated hitch, but required the rear bumper to come off to install it. It was spendy, but well worth it given how much we tend to tow things around the Northwest. Why did BMW seem to lose interest in a quality tow hitch accesssory for the US over the last ten years? |

My contact there was Ben Arnold, the Technical Manager. I'm sure that a few more inquiries regarding X3 hitches would not hurt the cause. It dosen't cost anything to send them an email. Received in late January: "Thank you for your inquiry and kind words, we are currently in development on the new X3 and expect testing to be done by mid to late February. Our hitch will exceed manufactures stated towing capacities, as with liabilities we can only rate it per their parameters. It will be a direct bolt on with no welding." |

Just spoke with Customer Service (BMWNA). They had said back in January the expected towing package availability date was sometime in April. Today was a bit of a disappointment. No recollection of stating that there was going to be a towing package, and that the last information date for any 2011 X3 accessories was in 2010. Will be an interesting dance by the CA later today, as I'd bought the X3 with a promise of a towing package. In writing ...

For my case, the dealer will send the card to a third party for the installation of a regular hitch (I guess this is soldered to the body). this is about 650$. This electric hitch is a gimmick to impress people IMO. I need three different balls so regular hitch is more convenient.

Follow up.
Spoke with the CA today, and the response he got for the 2011 X3 towing package is ... maybe August if not before. So, basically, nothing certain. I'd fuss with Customer Service, but since they've already lied to me once, I'm going to see if I can find someone else to get something a bit more solid than "maybe".

Any cutting of metal required? I assume you had to pull the painted bumper cover and cut the lower fascia?
