The German Color Scale Lives!
I was browsing new inventory while my 2 Series was briefly in for an oil change. I was going to look further, but I fell asleep.

Don't blame the brand... blame the buyers

I blamed the dealers too - they seem to always order 50 whites, 50 blacks with a smattering of gray. Most of them don't have a light interior either. Almost ensuring that I always need to custom order.

Private buyers (as 1st owners) are almost non-existent. This is because (a) the dealerships block the slots by "mainstream" configurations - easy to sell immediately as new cars, but in stock, (b) by companies and lease companies. (a) & (b) have a common motivation: Any other then white/grey/black will be eventually hard to sell to the 2nd, 3rd owner... and they also fear of paint job in case of an accident (even though any X3 color is metallic/pearl,... so the difficulty is the same). That's also why (at my neck of the woods) the burgundy red and phytonic blue are the most interesting colour trims... kinda sad.

Blame statistics. Black, white, and silver are "not my favorite but close enough" for 99% of buyers. Colors like red, green, blue, etc are each actual favorites for lots of people but are also each "no way" colors for probably about 20%+ buyers. Since a huge percentage of people want to drive off with their new car same-day, having everything in "good enough" colors is absolutely in the dealership's best interest. Profit from a customer who's just okay with a color is just as good as the profit from one that loves the color.
This is also why cars that are more commonly ordered than bought off the lot are way more common to be seen in actual colors; people will pick out their actual first choices. |
