Has anyone confronted this error regarding the Heat Management Module.

The vehicle in question is a 2020 X3 30i.

the error occurs after the vehicle is up to temperature and will throw a drive train malfunction caution message on the main screen.
Eventually the fault clears but reappears a few minutes later.
When the caution appears the coolant temp drops dramatically into the 170 range.
Coolant level is right at the max level in bother reservoirs

I did some digging into the issue and found that the failed component is covered under an extended California emission component warranty. The coverage extends to vehicles sold in New York.
The split cooling valve is part of the Heat Management Module and is clearly listed under covered items. I already scheduled an appointment with BMW for diagnosis/repair, and the vehicle is 2K miles past the new vehicle warranty expiration. Hopefully they don't give any push back.

Dealer looked up the VIN and unfortunately there is no 7-70 warranty on the X3. Seems a bit odd. Why would the manual that came with the car state something that isn't so.

That's total BS. Either go to another dealer or complaint with BMWNA.

I contacted BMW NA. They assured me that the X3 does indeed qualify for the 7-70 California emission warranty. Waiting to hear back from SA.

The SA approved the repair but also suggested a coolant flush to the tune of $400 dollars. I advised him that the coolant would be dumped during the repair so it wouldn't be necessary.

Make sure not to leave without having them change that cabin air filter. Can’t imagine leaving that alone after a procedure like this.

Just wanted to provide an update:

- I was quoted ~3k for repair costs
- Explained that this should be covered under the limited warranty, but initially received push back. After providing the warranty booklet with the important parts highlighted, things changed and car was covered under warranty.

Just FYI!!

Same issue for me. Not under warranty and not located in CA or NY. It is on me at 68k miles. I'm going to fix it and then sell my car.

Your SA is diligently exploring methods to extract some cash from you lol I am sure many people unfamiliar with the process would likely agree without hesitation.

X3 Heat Management Module

I have a 2020 X3 and had the same issue. Received drive train malfunction error constantly so I took it into the local BMW service station. I was initially told that the heat management module was bad and needed to be replaced at a cost of $3,500. I googled it and found this thread so I called BMW and told them it should be covered under warranty since I have less than 70,000 miles... they agreed to fix it under warranty. However, now that I have the car back, I am getting an antifreeze like smell coming from the air conditioning vents. Can anyone tell me what this might be? I am thinking the service technician did something wrong when replacing the heat management module - maybe didn't seal something correctly.

2020 X3 Heat Management Module

This post just saved me $3,000. I had this exact same problem occur with my 2020 X3 with 59,000 miles on it and was advised the faulty heat management module was causing the drivetrain malfunction notification. Once finding the post I talked with the SA and sent them the highlighted warranty to which they reviewed and advised me that it was in fact covered under this warranty.

Thank you!!

Look at the second post in this thread . I think you have to live in certain states for the warranty to apply .

If you’re not under warranty, you’re not under warranty.

Will having an aftermarket downpipe screw with this warranty? Might be worth reverting to stock for this job?

There’s a relatively recent you tube video from FCP Euro that talks about the B48/58 engines and typical repair issues. Oil filter holder and heat management unit were noted in particular because the plastic at their sealing faces melts/distorts over time and allows for oil and coolant leaks and even mixing. Sounded like 50k-75k is when those particular parts often start showing leak/failure issues.

Might be worth tracking down and watching the video
