Ticking noise due to lifters on the 28i
Hello - I happened to come across a video by a German mechanic who claimed that you could eliminate your ticking noise from the lifters by revving your engineat 3000 rpms for approx 2 mins. In the video the ticking was gone and he claims it is a permanent solution. Anyone tried this or is it a sham? Thank you

Its not a sham nor do I think it is a permanent solution. I have heard the same thing on other BMW forums on how to fix lifter tick. If it really is your lifters and they are gunky then this would help the problem. Buuuuut, I see it as a temporary solution to a common problem. Most of BMWs engines have lifter noise. As long as it's not something else or a collapsed lifter I think this procedure can help the lifter get pumped full of oil and quiet down the ticking.
If you do have lifter tick, use at your own discretion an engine oil additive or just do more oil changes. I personally like using engine oil additives from trusted company's from time to time but that's just me. Use at your own risk. |

I appreciate the comment - I'll mention the oil additive to my mechanic- thank you! I do use a fuel system cleaner, and additive so I am a big fan - thank you again!

Personally I have used the Liqui Moly engine flush right before an oil change. The engine was quiet prior but I felt it made a tiny bit of a difference. Honestly I think the difference came from the engine flush cleaning the Vanos solenoids. Anyway, just wanted to give a recommendation.
I have also put half a quart of marvel mystery oil for 1k miles before an oil change. No issues with my car or any sort of metal pieces when I did the oil change. Good luck! |
