"Click" when pressing throttle, and "click" letting off throttle
UPDATE - see below
Suddenly noticed a problem yesterday running an errand: If I'm cruising along 20 or 30 mph, and slightly press throttle, and audible CLICK happens - sounds like it's coming from underneath the rear seat but on the passenger side. If I then let off the throttle, and similar CLICK occurs. Under the rear seat, but on the drivers side. I was driving along a street tapping and letting off throttle and it was CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK as I played with the throttle. This CLICK even happens when parking: Stopping car, press brake, shift to R, let off brake, CLICK as I start to move backward... and then after backing up, brake, shift into D, let off brake, CLICK as I move forward. Happens at all speeds and RPMs. Drive mode, engine mode, manual/auto shifting, exhaust noise, D1/2/3, nothing effects it, it is always the same CLICK. I plan on taking the car to service tmrw morning ASAP but I wondered if anyone has seen this issue? UPDATE: I'd found this BMW Technical Service Document pertaining to the M5, but then amended to include the M2, M3 and M4 (F80/F82/F87). I gave this document to my Service advisor. After seeing the issue with my X3M, they got BMW to update the service bulletin to include the X3M (it wasn't on the bulletin before I guess?). He said they had to order parts and with the delays and such it will be 3-5 days... anyway I can drive the car until the parts get in. UPDATE: Dealer fixed issue. Took a few weeks to get the parts/Loc-Tite ordered. Drives fine now, no issues. Last edited by harperium; 09-15-2021 at 03:45 PM.. |

but the key is that the CLICK can be reproduced by parking when the car isn't moving enough to cause anything in the car to move around. Merely letting off the brake and idling forward (or reverse) induces a click. This PDF from BMWTIS accurately describes what I'm experiencing. |

My service advisor was able to reproduce the issue and he said BMW amended the Technical Advisory to include the X3M. They had to order parts, so it'll be 3-5 days on those. The car can be driven as the issue is not a safety issue.

According to the TSB this has been a problem since August 2018 and it’s STILL a problem 3 years later?

Just spoke to a rep at BMW NA and the X3M/X4M have not been added to the bulletin. I was told it will come down to each individual dealership to diagnose the issue. Couldn't tell me how many, if any, of our vehicles have been covered under this bulletin.

Is it worth taking the rear diff apart by less than qualified techs at your local dealer?

But prior to the fix, the click was annoying as f*ck. It was all I could hear when driving - not that it was super loud, but once you hear it, you can't not hear it. |

I just found this is the Owner's Manual:
With this vehicle, particular value was placed on the direct connection from engine to the drive‐ train. Due to the torsionally rigid design of the drivetrain, as is typical in a sports vehicle, the transmission of the torque also gives acoustic feedback. When there are load changes, this may result in clicking noises. The clicking noises do not impair the operation or the service life of the components. Still, it's a defect and should be fixed. |

I have had this noise for the past few months. It started once in a while and now it is constantly clicking when tapping the gas or letting go of the gas pedal. The dealer couldn't replicate the problem. |
