I had vibration and drivetrain malfunction error two or three times before, but that was in summer. Vibration comes in at high gear and high load situation. (say you keep it in manual mode, 8th gear, and give it full throttle but not kickdown). The vibration is medium/high frequency but small amount, kinda like shimmering. |

I slowed down to 50 mph and when I would accelerate I would feel the vibration through the gas pedal. I haven't driven the car since this morning. We'll see if it happens again. I also have a 28i

I got similar error 2 days ago in my 7 series. Although it was red and said I should stop. Also got weird noise coming from the steering. My problem was mainly because the cold bugs somehow the hydraulic oil. Maybe since my garage is underground and extremely tight I have to make many many maneuvers. Anyway once the car warms up and restart it no problem whatsoever. Actually, I had this last year again when it was -10 Celsius and the car was outside. Then the dealership told me the reason is the cold and also low hydraulic oil level.
I guess that if you still get errors once your car is warmed up and then restarted maybe it is something more serious or just sensors unable to deal with the cold

*knock on wood. Error did not come back on the drive back and drive to work this morning. Since mine did have the vibration I don't think it is a sensor error. The car was sitting for almost a week and half so maybe the fluid just didn't warm up enough and was driving too slow before getting onto the highway.
Hope it's nothing! |

Got this error for the first time ever this morning (outside temp 3F i.e. ~-15C) along with the vibration that many of you described. I kinda figured it had to be a cold weather issue. Hoping it goes away on its own (keeping my fingers crossed)...
Although, I had the car parked for nearly 3 months outside when I was in Edmonton, AB, Canada last year. Temperatures routinely went down to -20/-30C, but I never had this problem there. During the previous, I was in another town in Alberta for about 10 months with similar temperatures, but never had the problem then either (although that may be because it was parked inside a garage). Also, the car was left in the garage all through winter and when spring came, started right back up without a problem! I was really impressed, especially because everybody in town had made dire predictions that my car wouldn't start because it didn't have a block heater... Anyway, coming back to the current drivetrain malfunction error issue, is there a permanent fix to it? |

If the transmission was slipping wouldn't the car rev up but no noticeable gain in speed or at least intermittent power going into the drivetrain. I played around with manually shifting the car and it goes through all the gears with no issues. Lets hope it's just a cold issue.

Lovely! It happened again. Again slow speed for about 10 minutes. Merged on highway with a bit of acceleration and bam same error with vibration. I did shift it into manual mode. I noticed if I went above 3k RPM it did not vibrate. My dad said it could be a misfire. I looked at the codes in the secret menu and did not find any.
It went away again after a minute of driving and the temperature gauge ticked up a bit from the flat 140F mark. I am catching up on this thread but did the individuals with PCM replacements have the same vibration error? |

try running some chevron fuel cleaner ... it could help ... its also best to drive slowly for the first couple miles to warm up the fluids

I feel the same. Vibration comes at low RPM but high load situations... High rpm seem to be okay. I just ease off the gas pedal when I feel vibration then press it down again, so far no malfunction has appeared recently...

Can any of our friends up north who had the module problems confirm they had the vibration appear during the error? I am hoping it is weather related but I been driving the wife's car to make sure everything checks out.

I dropped off my 2013 for a small body repair at a Collission Center this morning and I was handed a 2015 X3 as a rental. Hilariously, the 2015 had a Drivetrain Malfunction warning pop up (we're in a cold freeze right now) which went away after awhile. No vibration.

This whole thing is annoying since the problem is intermittent. I have aftermarket warranty but if the problem can't be diagnosed then it can't be fixed. |

Was just at the dealership today for scheduled maintenance and found out they replaced the Integrated Supply Module under some campaign. I asked if it was related to cold weather and they said yes. Updated weather sealing will prevent moisture seepage that occurs in cold weather.

26 miles into my fresh LCI xdrive 35i delivery and I have this error message. Central coast CA so no cold weather temps here. Not sure what the deal is but every time I mash the pedal to about medium throttle it happens. I scheduled a maintenance appointment for Thursday, I'll let you know what they find out. Sucks because I am loving this thing so far!

I had this occurance in the first 16K and I live in sunny SoCal.
My service advisor actually found a software update for my error. No problems whatsoever in the last 44K miles. See my thread on the SW code. |

Had the same thing happened last week It was around +20°C here in Toronto. I've been experiencing jerkiness at low gears while in traffic so I decided to switch gears in manual shift mode to see if the jerkiness would be better controlled, then Drivetrain Error showed up; manual shift mode automatically shifted to automatic and was stuck on 1st gear...luckily I was able to pull in at a parking lot and turned off the engine. Waited for a few minutes then re-started it...so far the error has not come back.
As for the jerking on lower gears/speed...I have gone back and forth (4 times) to the dealership and have it looked at. It would seem to be fixed but after a few weeks it would come back on/off unpredictably...now 4 years later and over 90k, my warranty is expired and the jerking problem was never fully fixed. I talked to the dealership and they are not being helpful...expired warranty, now I have to pay for any/every service. Any advice??? Thanks! |

I went to Maranello around Oct'14. At first they said they were not able to find any software updates...but one of the tech guy said he had to do a "workaround" then managed to update it. There was a significant change on the torque and gas consumption (originally 11.4L/100km, after update 12.2)...but now I'm still having problems with jerky acceleration.

Just had this occur on our 2015 LCI X3 28i. It happened right after startup going about 25mph. Car seemed to be driving fine but I was in a residential so couldn't really get on it to see if there was any reduced power. We're in FL so it's definitely not cold weather related. Read all I could here and other sites but it seems there is really no conclusion as to the cause. Luckily we're still under warranty but not for long, she has over 40k already. We've already had one sensor replaced under warranty that was causing chassis stab / brake light / etc. warnings to appear a few months after delivery.
This is quite frustrating. If I find out anything useful from the dealership I'll post it up.
