'My BMW Remote' iPhone app
Anyone has tried the iPhone app 'My BMW Remote' in his new X3?
I know is not official in the US or Canada... |

The app is there in the iTunes store, it just doesn't do anything so far as I can tell. Waiting to see if it reacts differently with the media snap-in adapter for the iPhone integration. Probably won't . . . 6NR

I'd forgotten about this. Now downloading it - thanks!
Google Local Search will come in handy if it works because at the moment "Send to Car" doesn't work from Google Maps on a mobile, only from a desktop. This might be a workaround for basic routes where all the car needs is a destination. Will post some feedback...

Booooo! Is it only for 6NR? I thought this was separate?

Well, I don't really know. My read of it was that some really basic functions might work, but that the future capabilities would require 6NR. Seems like this one isn't gonna get any less murky until it comes out and people are able to mess with it!

It does not require 6NR. The remote lock and vehicle finder evidently works - see the description in iTunes for more info on what it does and what cars it works on (yours).

Cheers ksoze.
I’ve now registered for this and got it working (I think) but as you can see here, my attempts to check up on the whereabouts of my X3 from 40 miles away (I'm at work without the car) have failed Good news for people having an affair and using their BMW to go where they shouldn't be going! Some other action shots (it even knows what alloys I've got ) not tried all of this yet but Local Google Search has potential to get around the fact that the "send to car" Google feature doesn't work on mobile phones. OK, you can't send the whole route but you can search for a destination and send that to your car, which is what most people want this for. For example Find car function also very useful in large car parks where you've forgotten where you've parked! In case you're wondering, for security you have enter security details sent to your phone and then setup a PIN Will try the remote unlock/lock later on

I'm guessing this requires the BMW Connected Drive subscription or something similar?
I'm wondering, is it locally tied in some way? Would it, in theory, be possible to sign up for the UK version with my swedish car? |

In theory, yes, in practice you're as likely to succeed doing this as you are to find your X3 on the bmwusa website for the purposes of tracking its production, i.e. no chance

sfax: Yeah, that's what I figured. Was hoping that it'd be as easy as getting a US iTunes account...
Fingers crossed that 'connected drive' is spread to other countries. Thanks for the help. |

Joy is approaching your house on foot from about 1000 feet away, not being able to see your X3, but knowing it's there, just over the brow of the hill, pressing a button on your iPhone and then waiting, waiting, waiting, then BEHOLD! The xenons light up the night sky! Not once, twice but thrice!
What I'm trying to say is that yes, the BMW Remote iPhone app works. Haven't tried the remote horn sounding yet because I didn't want to annoy the neighbours, worry the wife and wake up the baby

App in the US iTunes store doesn't have any of that stuff and won't connect to my car with the Apple cable as it says it should.

To set this up go to www.bmw-connecteddrive.co.uk 1. register / log in (redirects to https://www.bmw-assist-login.com 2. registration (for ConnectedDrive) includes supplying a mobile number and takes a couple of days to activate 3. go to My Remote Services then activate remote services 4. setup security questions 5. click activate remote services and a code is sent to your mobile 6. get app from App Store 7. on first time use you will prompted for ConnectedDrive credentials and security questions and then you have to choose a PIN for future use 8. select your car and you should now be ready to go

Just in case anyone is interested, I recently contacted BMW customer services to enquire whether the iPhone app would be made available for Android.
Here is the response: I have investigated your enquiry and regrettably, I am unable to confirm the information that you have requested as this is not being considered as yet. However, I have forwarded the details of your correspondence to our Product Development Team for internal review. Any updates with regard to this, will be displayed on our website, once it has been made available. Re. "Product Development Team", these are the same guys that brought you playing an album in song title alphabetical order. Don't expect anything any time soon.
This is the reason that 6NR has so much potential. It opens up development to people that know how to write apps, so you're not constrained to people who design car software and don't live in the real world
