Tech package with "6NR" BMW Apps
I am sure some of you have seen the story of the release of a newer nav/ connected drive system rumored for upcoming march '11 production. The option code is 6NR. This system pairs to an iPhone for increased functionality.
Curently the code for the x3 is 6NL. The story does not state which models will receive this newer update. Does anyone know if the F25 will receive this? And, if so, when? |

I don't know the answer, but I'm very keen to make sure I spec. my car with 6NR, I'm going to be ordering the 3.0d here in the UK as soon as it's available.

Tried to get more info out of my dealership here hoping to confirm the software/firmware thing and what base equipment was required to make use of it. They had (or claimed) to have no idea what I was talking about. None. No help there.

Reply from BMW UK. I'm pleasantly surprised with how comprehensive it is

Thanks! I read the configuration manual for the X3 and could not find 6FL and 6NF, although there most definitely are two USB ports, one for the phone/audio and one for exporting the profiles and updating the software. Anyone knows if it is applicable to the X3 with prof navigation and prof hifi system? On the other hand the functions ofered by 6NR don't seem to be extremely compelling for me. I do not tweet in the car

I just spoke to someone at BMW of North America and she said 6NR "cannot be upgraded or retrofitted". She got this information from her local dealer. I have a call into the sales manager at my dealership who may have contacts at the factory and can get more info, but so far the dealership has no knowledge of 6NR.
Sounds like I'm going to have to hold off ordering for a couple of months. |

I am also skeptical in that the BMW 800 number reps may be simply reading from the script from the original press release that says that it is available for cars after 3/2011. I do not believe NA dealers have info on this option, aside from what we read and extrapolate from press releases.

I have been checking with my dealer here in Australia and he had no idea either.
I contacted BMW Australia directly and was advised that it will not be an option in Australia due to the perceived driver safety issues that one may face by using this option while driving... what a load of whatervers..... Maybe check to see if the same issue may be evident in your country or perhaps compliance for this option not given by the Motor authority yet... |

I assume more information on 6NR will become available in a few weeks when the software is available but I would say the following: 1. 6NR is only worth getting if you have an iPhone4 or 3GS 2. You will need the software upgrade (£130) and a new adaptor for the iPhone4/3GS (£150??) which is not yet available so don't buy the media snap-in adaptor now if you intend to get 6NR because it will become redundant. 3. 6NR is only compatible with Professional Multimedia 4. If you only want to see album covers when playing back music, all you need is the media snap-in adaptor which is already available. It's designed for iPhone3G/3GS. I don't know if other devices will work but I assume iPods will work as the software is the same. I intend to get 6NR because I think that the ConnectedDrive stuff has potential for some pretty useful applications. It might be a bit lame to begin with so it might be worth waiting to see what becomes available. On a side note, if you are thinking of ordering DAB digital radio, in theory you could get the same thing if you had a good enough internet connection with 6NR. I listen to digital radio on my iPhone via FStream now and it works very well to and from London - same principal. The key here is internet connectivity though. I wouldn't want to rely on it as it stands in the UK

Handling BMW customer service doesn't necessarily make them a BMW employee (although they certainly should have the information).
In the UK they outsource a lot of this to organisations that (supposedly) excel in customer service. I remember visiting Ventura for a reference visit on eService a few years ago and they dealt with the web and call centre aspects of quite a few premium car brands which as I recall included both VAG and BMW. |

Agreed. It is a real circle jerk however, as the dealers are saying they do not know anything from BMW and BMW is asking them for info.

Anyone learned anything more on this? I am ready to order but I hate to be a month off on the new toys, especially since I have an iPhone 4.

It's only software and a cradle so there is no advantage in waiting for it to become available to add to your order that I can see. It may not even be available as a factory option to begin with, so you may have to buy it as an accessory even when it does become available.

6NR now available as an option on the UK website (I checked xDrived20d M Sport). It's called Mobile application preparation (S06NR). No description of what it actually is or does, (which is in keeping with the rest of the website). Cost is £130 = $206 inc tax
Still not available as an accessory though.
