The only reason I can think of is weight savings. Every other after market exhaust kept the single to dual pipe design on the x3 exhaust.

Ultimately it comes down to is what the primary intended purpose of your exhaust is; boost performance or to elicit increased sound? Given exhaust benefits to power are largely negligible regardless of design, especially when emissions controls are in place, sound is likely the answer for most. Hence offering what is effectively a straight pipe when the valves are open to generate maximum sound.
On the tip front, all tips are functional albeit in different scenarios certain ones are favored more than others. That said, ff 4 equally flowing banks are a make or break thing then so be it. Tis the beauty of having options in the marketplace. We simply decided to focus on the sound above all else. |

I don't know why people think the valve placement cuts off the exhaust route through the muffler. It functions exactly like our OEM functions.
When closed exhaust is blocked from completing the route through the "loud" route. All exhaust must route through the part of the back box (muffler) that reduces sound the most. When open the route through the muffler is still there but there is a direct route as well that uses minimal sound deadening material in the case of OEM or straight pipe in the case of Dinan. Exhaust back pressure will NOT increase nor stay the same when the valve is opened. It can only reduce because the preexisting route is still open as well as the easier/louder route. Same setup/mechanics as OEM. Lastly, I doubt very many M40is on here have actually modded up to the level that changes in the muffler design would net even noticeable improvements outside MAYBE a few HP on a dyno. Y'all worrying too much about stuff that doesn't matter at the power levels most everyone here is at. |

I can’t really say by looking at the image on the first page, but I would guess that by default when the valve is closed. The exhaust gas is routed through the muffler and distributed to the other three outlets….unless the two inner outlet pipes on each side are just for show, which I doubt.
If I’m right, then exhaust gas would flow out of both sides of the rear of the car at startup when the valve is closed, which is an improvement for anyone irked by the stock exhaust configuration in this respect.

So I had the Dinan exhaust installed. I don’t believe there’s a performance gain (or loss) unless you’re doing a dyno run, and I certainly don’t feel a difference in performance.
That said, it’s a completely different car—it’s how they were meant to sound from the factory. It sounds unreal. I also did some long-distance driving: no drone, not annoying at all. Driving in Eco mode at a constant speed, you can hardly hear it. Highly recommended—great build quality from Dinan. If you don’t have one, you’re definitely missing out on the best of the B58! Do I like it? No—I love it! |

I'm assuming you hate the look of the tips since that's the only thing you can see. You can change tips pretty easily with clamp on or a shop welding new tips.
