A low and light vehicle like a GTI doesn't need as stiff a suspension to maintain semi-decent handling. Higher, heavier vehicles need stiffer suspensions to get decent handling to counteract the weight/height. Also, your GTI is not "that" sporty (as fine of a vehicle as it is). Even the Golf R doesn't come anywhere near a full fat M vehicle. So really, the X4M is at least two steps above your GTI in terms of sportiness. Hence why I do not think they're really comparable. With all of this said, my experience is that the ride smoothed out a tad after a few thousand miles and the istep update improved it a bit more even still. But I don't think it will ever ride like your GTI across all road conditions. Did you test drive the X4M on smooth roads? It does reasonably well on smooth roads.

Someone at the dealer still has to work on the vehicle and use dealer equipment to perform said update. Also the update can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, if everything goes as planned and no control unit fails. They surely need to get paid too. This is why most all idrive 7 cars are now getting OTA update options. X3/X4 and X3 M/X4 M are now currently the only cars without it until the LCI comes out.

There are several dozen computer systems in BMWs, and each has its own software. The ISTA update in question affects certain of these other systems but not others (like the DME). It's not done over the air as there is a greater chance of bricking the car. It's annoying, certainly, but understandable. At least we now have software updates for iDrive 7. |

who said that after software update, engine is not increasing rpms to warm up catalytics? I still have this shit going on. sitting on parking lot waiting for my wife from store and it raising up rpms to 900 for like 5,6 mins. then drops again. the most weirdest thing I've ever seen. useless at all points. just annoying for everyone.

My dealer in Canada is still refusing to do the update... Says that when they put the vin in their system the car is all up to date (although the Imprint screen shows 2019). Any ideas how I can make them understand? I told them to update Istep but they keep getting back to their vin point... Any one has an invoice from a dealer showing the work?

In the greater Toronto, there is just about a dozen of BMW dealership. Call them and tell them that you would like to have them take over the maintenance and warranty work and you would like to have the Software updated to the latest version and you are willing to pay for it. You should not make too many call... |

Which dealership? I am going to the downtown Toronto one... Also, do you happen to have a copy of the work order to show the update done (obviously redacted for personal info)? That would be EXTREMELY helpful to me and others trying to get some of these shops to do their job...

At this point in time, do people think it would make sense to wait the 6/21 software instead? Do they have a fixed release cadence for the software releases or are new releases made randomly?

You have to go the safety route in my opinion, which is the lane keep route. That way you can threaten to contact BMWNA about a potential safety issue. This gives you more leverage than anything with CarPlay.
Dealerships know what you're asking them to do, they are just playing dumb. The good ones will do the update with little resistance for free, the average ones will do it if you pay out of pocket and put a little pressure on them, and the worst will refuse because they don't want to tie their techs up either way. You have to go in with some leverage and a backup plan. |
