Android Auto installation experience
I was able to get android auto installed in my 2020 X3 yesterday. It was a bit of a shaky experience at the BMW dealer in Durham North Carolina, and went like this.
I called on Wednesday to make an appointment and told them I would like to get the android auto update. The service tech told me no problem, but I would need to leave it for most of the day. So I agreed to drop it off Thursday and pick it up on Friday. When I arrived on Thursday the service department (and even the shop foreman) was now saying that android auto wasn't available at all at this time. I showed them on several posts where others in the US had had recently installed and asked them to pursue it more diligently as I driven all the way to the dealer with my car and with a ride home. The next afternoon I called about the car and was told that they indeed were successful in installing the android auto. But,when I went to pick it up, I was told that there would be a $200 charge for the installation since it was "upgrade". They even wanted me to sign a document saying I've been told about this in advance, when it had never been mentioned over the phone or even when I dropped it off. After a brief conversation with others at the service department they agreed to not charge me, but only after I heard one of the service advisors from the day before call me a "pain in the ass" because I didn't just take their word that android auto wasn't even available. But now in the end, I do now have functioning android auto capability on my 2020 X3 with ID7 pro hardware. |

Why should they do it for free?
I'd expect to have paid an hourly rate or agreed fixed charge. |

I was told that when I bought the car that it was supposed to come OTA, but BMW has not figured out how to do that yet, it seems. They need to hire some Tesla programmers and get this out quickly so dealers are not needed.

Hi, did the update include AA, if so what is your model and build date. I contacted the Connected Drive team in the UK who said that the update doesn’t include AA. My UK X3 is an M Sport 20i with iDrive 7.0 and Live Cockpit Professional.

I agree. I think it is the service managers and foreman who are more responsible. I am dealing with a similar situation. I went to Circle BMW in Eatontown, NJ and the service manager tells me "BMW doesn't have Android auto, only Apple car play". I feel like they should be up to date on what's current on these vehicles. Why don't all of these dealers follow the same rules? It's very aggravating to say the least how they all make up their own rules.

Dealerships barely know android auto exists. BMW doesn't give us info regarding a bug update like this. It took me like half an hour just to find this document and i work at BMW. 20-07 brings android auto. X3 does not have remote software upgrade yet.

Mine is a January 2020 build X3 sDrive with ID7 Live Cockpit Pro. Don't let a dealer tell you it is impossible to install at this time.

Release in July is certainly true for the US. There is a chance that it might not yet be released in Canada for Rob_G77, but next year would seem too far to make any sense.

I dropped my car off Friday, got it back today.
Tech notes say I don't have an MGU head unit but I clearly do if you check the settings pages in the car. It's a '20 X3 m40 with live cockpit pro and all that jazz. Emailed my SA, will see what she says. Kinda annoyed, definitely think the tech wanted the car out of there and they're punting on it.. |

I'm just shocked that something that's a pretty big deal for a very large customer base isn't more widely known to the ones who are going to be doing the updates on our cars.
