Upgraded HPFP - TU / Dorch Stage 2 pump
Hey Guys,
For all those pre-2020's that don't have the upgraded TU pump/fuel rail - Have you made any considerations into this for the extra power it affords us? From what I can gather from the B58 crowd, there's a couple P'n'P options out there, in addition MHD (my tune of choice) has Stage 2+ maps also available which makes this an interesting proposition to look at. Has anyone given proper thoughts and consideration to this? |

I'm not sure what you're asking.
From what I understand, it allows for higher fuel flow, which could result in better high RPM performance with a tune. |

I'm asking if anyone has seriously considered doing this on their M40i?
But from the lack of replies, this pretty much answers itself. |

At what hp increase does the stock fuel delivery become a problem?

I think a 2018/2019 M40i is fine with a 400bhp map ... only if trying to go farther would you want a new fuel pump (I am EU btw). To me a map to 400 ish bhp will be fine so unless going 'mad' the new fuel pump is not an issue.

MHD and BM3 both have the stage2+ built for those with the hpfp upgrades on the G-B58 variant.
Aside from the Tu fuel pump there is the Dorch Engineering stage 1 and 2, Spool performance FX-150 and FX-180, plus the XDI unit that nobody seems to use since its so damned pricey in comparison. I'm still deciding between the Tu pump if I can find one for around 600 or less (USD), otherwise I'm going to go with the Spool fx-150 or the DE stage 2 so I can run full E85 on the stock turbo or have the potential to run upgraded turbo if I so choose down the line. my choice will depend on price and what my tuner prefers (going to use paul johnson [F80 paul]) but I'm still a little ways off from buying it. lining up fuel barrels and a pump for my home stored ethanol before I bother. maybe 4 months out? |

Upgraded fueling is needed when pushing 500-600+ HP. Especially when upgrading turbo. TU pump flows more than stock and Dorch stage 2 flows even more. My buddy has B58 340i and went VTT upgrade turbo. He originally had a Supra pump but then he went Dorch stage 2 for more fueling. He never did charge pipe injection or meth injection. I think he's putting down 600wheel on his set up right now.
We won't need upgraded pumps unless you're really pushing the stock turbo on full E or running upgraded turbo setup which most of us aren't. X3 owners seem a little more reserved in the heavy tuning world which is fine. These things are fast as it is. |

I found a very helpful link explaining the differences in the B58 and B58TU, for those interested:

yes it would need a custom tune, as far as the TU pump handling full e85..... debateable. I talked briefly with Paul Johnson and he seems to think you can, but with a larger pump (dorch stage 2, spool FX150/180) the extra headroom will ensure it and provide more power in general as opposed to just barely making it. Though for the Tu pump he always recommends going just E50 and reserving full e85 for the more potent pumps. as a note, it looks like his e50 tunes are getting nearly what other people's e85 tunes are netting them... so keep that in mind.

Just to keep this thread updated and going.. Dorch Stage 2 had been implanted.
Still deciding on custom tune route..I'm amazed by how much these tuners charge on this platform vs the older platforms.. |

Tell us more! (From what k have seen) most x3 M40i owners are doing cosmetic things and less focused on performance so glad to see someone making some improvements. What else have you done and will be doing?

heh, apparently I'm a performance modder now?
Suby01 - just a note, that the Tu pump is more capable than the standard pump but it still limited. The bright side is you can run the Stage 2+ e30 maps from MHD and BM3, but you are going to start running out of headway passed e30 due to running out of fuel delivery. So if you want to max out on something like E50 you'll be running into midrange issues on the stock Tu pump. Going larger turbo is going to be very difficult for the Tu pump on anything but strait 93, but tuners can make it "work". We have some options for the X3, but as a whole we are not as mod happy a group as the 3 series is, and thus get less parts to play with. We are selling more than the 3 series, but need more people demanding products (IE buying products) to keep the aftermarket interested in us.

How's your tune going? I'm looking into custom tuning options now and I haven't even put any E in the tank yet, still trying to use up all the 95 in there... : |

I was working with Halim on an e30 tune for the G01 cars with upgraded pump since I was finding an issue with the transmission limiting the power of the engine. since there is no TCU tune (outside of mission performance) for our chassis at the moment we were working on a way to get around that.... and that he did. he's now rewriting all the stock BM3 maps to use the same tune modality he figured out working with my issue originally of garbage low end on stage2+ e30 tune compared to standard stage 2 e30. so the next map revisions that come will be based on this.
This secondarily also shows why there is so little gain between stage 1 and stage 2 on our cars for the same reason. I was logging every map PTF made for our car so I could post a comprehensive review on them including Virtual Dyno plots based on the logs when I noted the near non-existant differences in so many of the tunes. it all stems back to our car pulling power due to the trans tune limiting factor. All that is to say that my new poked and limit removed stage 2+ e30 map is savage. I'm set to log it tonight after work if its not raining and I'll post a virtual dyno plot of it vs stock vs stage 2 93 (knowing its going to change) if you like to give an idea
