I got my x3 m40i 2020 about 2 weeks ago. She has about 1000 miles now. My father has the '19 X3 m40i. The main difference I hear in the exhaust are the pops and crackles come in sooner on the '19. For example, lifting off from 3-4K rpm will bring in the pops/crackles on the '19. On my '20, I had to rev it up to past 6k rpm in 2nd to get the loud pops/crackles. The 2020 is more subdued to me.
I'm aware of the 1200 mi break in. So for those arming up for the comments... don't care.

I'm still in " break in" but i took mine over 6k today with DSC off/Traction +? it made a nice rack and run-off sound. was almost home and playing around so not sure if normal for sport plus or the dsc off helped (no idea why it would). didn't repeat in my neighborhood, may try it tomorrow.

No one is talking about sport+. In my M340i the exhaust is notably louder with crackles in sport+ compared to sport. There is clearly something more open in sport+ and M40i should be about the same.

Are you stating that the X3 M40i and the M340i should sound exactly the same in sport plus?

First post here, but felt the need to chip in given my recent experience with my 2020 X3 M40i (end of September build).
I'm in the UK, and having followed the X3 M40i for a year or so, I was well aware of the WLTP changes made to the 2019 cars onwards; I love the sound of the 2018 cars but wasn't disappointed when I tested the 2019 model before ordering my 2020 version. When I got my car, again I was pleasantly surprised; whilst not the lous pops and crackles of the 2018 cars, it was actually fairly loud and made some nice sounds on overrun and under load. The key word there however is 'was'. I had to take my car to the dealer to have a fix implemented following what I can only describe as a Transformer-like sound coming from the speakers when I revved the car occasionally. Honestly, it was like Optimus Prime was being channeled through the speakers! Although only occasionally, I asked the dealer what they thought and they were happy to get it in the fix the issue as it was something they'd heard of. Here's the sting in the tail - when I got the car back from the dealers last week, after what they describe as a 'reprogram', all burbles, pops, mild crackles are gone. The car is so so quiet now! I made a video a few weeks ago, mainly to hear what the car was like from outside, link to it here: I'm going to put together a video post-reprogram, but honestly at this point (and given a host of other issues I've had with the car since I picked it up a month ago) I'm thinking of taking it back to the dealer and asking them to reset the change they've made if possible. Gutted isn't a strong enough word! |

You guys with the 2020 version have extra horsepower though and I think 1mpg more fuel efficiency.

In Europe the 2020 went from 354hp to 360hp. No big difference. Same torque. I guess the difference to the US 382hp are the European WLTP regulations, but I am not sure.

Well, it will be 280kW if that is the case. But then I wonder when they will change the websites. Looking at bmw.de, bmw.se etc all still show 265kW.
Anyway, I know mine is 260kW.

I wonder if this change has something to do with the law(s) in various states. Even though this is far from a new law, here is MSS 169.69 :
Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order which blends the exhaust noise into the overall vehicle noise and is in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a street or highway. The exhaust system shall not emit or produce a sharp popping or crackling sound. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with such parts and equipment so arranged and kept in such state of repair as to prevent carbon monoxide gas from entering the interior of the vehicle. No person shall have for sale, sell or offer for sale or use on any motor vehicle any muffler that fails to comply with the specifications as required by the commissioner of public safety. Further more from the equipment statutes: Injunctive power of attorney general. Whenever it appears to the satisfaction of the attorney general that any party has sold or offered for sale or is selling or offering for sale any such new motor vehicle or new item of motor vehicle equipment in violation of this section, the attorney general may, in the name of the state, seek injunctive relief in any court of competent jurisdiction against any such violation or threatened violation.

Which still wouldn't make sense why they didn't reduce the exhaust behavior for any other models. |

Got the VIN from the dealer. All in line with what I have ordered. The VIN starts with WBA which would indicate Germany. Looking now at the BMW plants there, none lists the X3 as a product they produce at the moment...

Mine's WBA...from Spartanburg. The dealer said South Africa which confused things at first.
