Thank you Calin and Pretzel. I'll order up the harness.
One would think that the iDrive should have a setting for something like this. I think a significant percentage of owners would turn off ASD and the loud exhaust at start-up if given the option without coding. |

Pull that fuse
If you haven’t unplugged ASD at the amplifier yet...pull the fuse F218
From the schematics, ASD is the only device on that circuit. Come on, you know you want to |

Here’s the rear fuse box layout - now there’s no excuse. It’s located inside the rear right side panel in the trunk.
ASD amplifier is rear left side panel for reference. |

Had ASD coded off on my F80 M3, so was eager to get rid of it on the M40i. Today I finally got around to pulling the plug from the small amp, per this thread. Jumped in the car for a 50 mile trip and lo and behold, no sound whatsoever. Just plugged it back in in the freezing outdoor parking lot. Then I sat down to lunch and read the whole thread to the end, including today’s post regarding fuse 218. After lunch I’ll pull the fuse. Moral of the story: RTFM (err, read the entire thread first).
Thanks for the assist(s). |

Update:No joy with removing fuse 218. It has the same effect as unplugging the small amp - all sound is completely off when that fuse is pulled, including stereo, seatbelt chimes, whatever. I guess I’ll have to code using BimmerCode.

Logical design would dictate that the ASD is mixed in to the main audio signal somewhere between the headunit equipment output and the audio entertainment amp input. I suspect the 'small amp' for ASD is actually an active mixing unit rather than an amp, mixing the output of the head unit with pre-recorded or microphone sourced exhaust noise. Likely not done in the head unit so it can be active even if the entertainment unit is switched off.
If it's not internally bypassed in the ASD module, then it's not surprising that disconnecting it (rather than externally bypassing it) will cause no sound at all as there will be no output to the main amp. Last edited by supersebbo; 01-17-2019 at 12:37 PM.. |

In theory (though probably un-noticable in practice) bypassing the ASD module should improve audio quality as there will be a cleaner signal path.

Seems like base unit mixes the ASD with radio and cannot be separated unless you get the by-pass harness mentioned up thread. HK unit has ASD function separately so it can be disconnected |

Regular (non Harmon Kardon) stereo in my M40i, so that likely explains why the disconnect (plug or fuse) doesn’t work.
Just coded using BimmerCode while waiting for kids to come out of school - seems to be working (ASD turned off) as advertised. I was previously a little nervous that “undoing it” would require restoring from a backup, but I guess I’ve grown more brave since my initial coding when I first had the car back in November. |

Glad you got ASD to turn off. How do you like it now?
So, pending updates on success of the harness for non-HK and fuse pulling for HK systems. |

Not trying to second guess you, but it would be odd for the amp-in audio path to be different between the HK and non-HK systems. |

My understanding is the HK system is a totally different amplifier, etc. vs the non-HK.
That’s why the different systems function differently with the ASD unit. The non-HK and ASD are totally entwined. That’s why you can’t just unplug the ASD. The HK and ASD are parallel and both connect to the speakers. Removing the ASD from the HK system, since the HK can standalone, continues to use all the speakers. That’s my take. Also, speakers aren’t powered by a fuse. They are powered by the amplifier. When someone with the HK system removes the fuse they can provide confirmation. |

I finally received the harness (Tecnic PNP is slow to ship and I am on the other side of the country). For those who have said in various threads that comfort and eco have no piped in sound from the ASD, I have to respectfully disagree.
In any event, I love it. In sport plus you can hear the exhaust in all of its glory. In comfort the quiet is appreciated. I still think that this should be a setting in the front end instead of coding, buying a harness or pulling a fuse.

Thank you for being the first one with an HK equipped vehicle to test Pretzel's theory. It's great to know that it works as Pretzel forecast.
