Waste gate out of wack
A couple weeks ago I posted a vid of some strange noises on cold starts and light-medium throttle driving. The conclusion is that it was normal with a catless dp and the sounds were coming from the waste gate. After some research on the BMW forums i've come to the conclusion that vacuum in the waste gate somehow got screwed up and I will be resetting it following this Kies Motorsports video
I'll do this on Monday ideally. I'll post back with results if this was in-fact the culprit. I could also just be dumb and these sounds are completely normal but as sounds normally are not picked up well on video, it does not do the atrocity of these noises justice. If you guys have done this before please give suggestions/advice. Seems like it should be a 15 minute job!

I've done it. It's quick and easy to do from the top. Good luck. I hope it fixes your problem.

I'm having some weird boost control issues and wondering if I needed to do it. I'm getting throttle closures from overboosting on BM3 Stage 1. Good to know it's easy to do from the top.

Update: Went to do this. Got the top nut off of the wastegate arm with ease. I wanted to check and make sure I could access the vacuum line to the actuator before I took of the lower nut which held the wastegate's position. I could not get the vacuum line off of the actuator. Likely due to the fact that, I have large hands and there is not much access to that hose. I could get a little grip on the line but she was really on there and it was not a regular vacuum hose, it was so sort of braided line. I will be trying this again but I am currently seeking some advice.
Is it safe to use pliers to remove the vacuum hose? How would one get the bottom nut on the wastegate arm loosened? What size hose fits the wastegate actuator fitting? The wastegate should be completely closed at the BMW recommended pressure of 5.9 In.Hg, is this correct? Thank you in advance!

I'd heat the fitting up with something like a hair dryer if possible. That way it should give much easier. I have an easier time pulling vacuum lines that way.

Took the car to BMW today. Just got a call, about 5 hours after dropping it off, and they said that they could not fix it under warranty. So I am back to fixing myself.
When I went to heat up the vacuum line I noticed that it was wrapped in some nylon covering so when I heated it, the line did not expand and I could not get it off. Any advice? Thanks in advance |

Update: Did this, the wastegate arm was a bit off but it did not fix it. Still makes a hissing noise on cold start and a horrible spool noise. Looking for other fixes/Suggestions.

Yeah, I'd check the turbo fins/bearing for any play. I installed my VRSF catless and I'm not experiencing the stuff you are. I also checked my wastegate nuts and they were still very tight, so I didn't mess with anything.

I thought this too but if I put it in sport or sport plus it doesn’t make the sound nearly as loud or if at all. Which makes me think it doesn’t have anything to do with turbo fins. I still think it’s something with the wastegate but I’m not sure. I connected to the vacuum line that leads up the engine and not the actuator I don’t know if that would give me a bad reading?

I will get a better video of the hissing on a cold start tomorrow. Hope that helps someone diagnose the issue!

$165 dollars spent on a new boost solenoid!! Hope that is the issue! Going to install that then reset the waste gate again. Will post back with results in a few days!

Installed the new boost solenoid and set the waste gate again. Still making the hissing noise. Not sure where to go from here.

I don't think it's a turbo issue. I checked for play and there was none at all. No fins (that i could see) we're damaged in anyway. I think the next thing to do is check for vac and boost leaks. I really only hear the hissing in comfort mode before boost comes on, as soon and boost hits the hissing goes away and it sounds beautiful! Pure turbos is the plan eventually but not just yet....
