Rust on Rear Axle Hubs
Is it normal for the rear axle hubs to show rust. I can see it through the wheels and it looks like sxxt. For a $50,000.00 SUV I can't believe it. Does anyone else have this problem?

You mean on the part of the brake disc that goes over the hub? With all the regulations, the materials car manufacturers have resorted to for brake components means they are more prone to rust.

Yes, after only 6 months, the hubs on my car started to rust. I believe they are cast iron and therefore can rust easily. My solution was to paint them with heat resistant paint. A bit of a chore, but they look a lot better!

All modern cars have this 'feature'. Comes from the removal of asbestos and the need to change the disc material.
Mostly appears when disc are wet but still cold. ie probably not after driving a few miles in the rain and using brakes. Heavy condensation nights will often trigger it. After washing car, take it out and dry the brakes - go far enough to warm up engine to avoid filling the exhaust with water condensate from a cold engine. |

When we were going thru the used BMW X3 a while back, every X3 we saw had some type of rust either on the disc where the pads does not comes in contact with or on the wheel hub. The X5 does not have this problem.
