Engine/Wind Noise 2013 X3 28 Anyone?
Does anyone who purchased the 2013 X3 has issue with noise while driving the car? I notice there was high pitch noise inside of the car. Firstly I thought the sound was created by windows or door was not fully closed, but later when I listen carefully, it seems like engine was creating this kind of noise and it only happens with the speed between 50 to 80 km/hr.
I tried to search online and found there was a thread from other forum: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1827314 Anyone experience that? I may take it back to my dealership next week. |

I only test drove the '13 28i a short distance on the highway but I didn't notice anything unusual... as a matter of fact I thought the car I drove was extremely quite.

It's indeed quite inside of the car on the high way. But there is wind-liked sound appears only when the car moving at 50-80 km/hour. Anything slower or quicker than that is dead quite.

I've had my '13 X3 M 28i in twice since I got it only 2 weeks ago and its going in again. I hate the start stop feature..car shakes each time. The engine is so rough that it sounds like a diesel... dealer states oh that's the new engine (wrong! answer) and the floor mat just ripped out. Almost ready to trade it back in.

+1 to this. I have exactly the same symptoms - the noise is only present between (roughly) 50 and 80 km/h.
I'm visiting the dealer next week and intend to ask them about it. |

Engine/wind noise
I just took delivery of a 28i a couple of weeks ago. I noticed some wind noise from the top of the a pillars above 60mph. Don't know if the roof rails contribute to this. Otherwise the car is pretty quiet.

Wind Noise/Whistling sound around 50-70mph
Glad this post has been started, I was going to post the other day about the very same thing I am experiencing (seems like there are good number of us out there)- a whistling/wind noise that is present at above 50-mph.
The car has made this noise since it was new. I figured it was just something I had to get used to as it is an SUV type auto and I was not expecting complete silence, but the noise does get quite irritating and is also noticed by my passengers, they keep commenting I may have left one of my windows cracked open. It doesn't always occur above 50mph and it is almost not noticeable at all. With the radio off the wind noise is definitely there at times when the car is traveling above 50mph or so. This keeps having me check that all my windows are up. I have seen the other posts about a TSB referencing a possible source as the mirror gaskets/seals. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...=578694&page=3 But the noise I am experiencing sounds like it's coming from higher up near the windshield area or sunroof, so I am not convinced this is the source of the noise I am hearing. I tried to track down the source of this noise and noticed that when I tilt the sunroof open (i.e. tilted-up, not slid back) the whistling noise stops! The interior cabin is actually quieter, again there has to be no other noise (i.e. radio, people talking) for you to notice this. Which got me wondering, as you would think that tilting it up would have more wind noise coming in the car. On my car I noticed that with the roof retracted all the way back the leading edge of the sunroof base (not the glass itself but the opening in the car itself) the rubber seals do not completely go all the way around the front end of the sunroof opening, they stop at the two sides. This seems to have been designed this way, I don't know why, as all the other cars I have had with sunroofs (which btw were very silent) have the rubber seals go all the way around the sunroof opening. I can't help but wonder if this is causing the issue with the wind noise we are hearing for those of us with sunroofs that are hearing this slight high-pitched whistling wind noise. I love this car but there are some idiosyncrasies with it, I am going to post another problem here about my more serious and recent transmission problem! |

FWIW my whistling/wind noise stops when I hit 80 km/h which roughly equals 50 mph. It starts around 30 mph. So I don't hear it at highway speeds like you apparently do.

I have the noise above 50 mph. It's the passenger mirror. Have a friend put hand between A pillar and mirror on mirror support to "interrupt" air flow. Stops it for me. If really starts to bug me; thinking tape

X3 MIRROR
/Users/barnes3412/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2013/01/20/20130120-082707/IMG_0918.JPG
/Users/barnes3412/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Previews/2013/01/20/20130120-083513/UXKIHyTyThSjVAmgOhjwXA/IMG_0920.jpg I hope that these links work to show the picture of my mirrors and the work order. The mirrors are the same type that was previously placed on the vehicle. The first step to stopping the wind noise was the recall around the mirror, then BMW replaced all the door seals, still didn't help. Finally after testing wind noise for a week they replaced the mirror caps. Hope this helps (Sorry about the link not working) Last edited by B3412; 01-20-2013 at 09:09 AM.. |

Very Worried
Hi guys .......... my first ever post. Would like to have started a new thread but need three posts first !!
I have a new X3 on order with my local dealer.I have been a VW driver for the past 10 years but chose this vehicle after reading the motoring press reviews which were very good. I stumbled upon this forum which is causing me some considerable concern. Wind noise, steering rack problems appear to be amongst a number of faults that are being picked up by users. I have 10 days under UK law to ask for my deposit back, should I be doing this? I have no wish to be stuck with a vehicle that is going to cause problems especially as this is the most I have ever spent on a car. Sincere apologies for this thread hi-jack but I dont have much time to make a decision and I wanted to get as much informed opinion as is possible. I hope you will forgive my thread jack but also understand my reasons for doing so. I also hope that I will receive some reassuring replies or its off to the dealer for me !!! |
