As someone waiting for their X3 I find it quite interesting to read the different reports on this subject. Some people don't have any issues and others do.
Can it really only affect certain cars? I note the following from the Telegraph's review of the X3: Quote:

I was wondering if it was build day related ... :-)

I am always based on the feel of the interior noises when driving on the highway- good road quality- when making statements like I have a wind noise and a traffic noise issue. |

I have now heard back from Customer Services following my writing to the BMW UK MD. I am told that the noise level in the cabin is determined to be a characteristic of the vehicle and that BMW Germany have advised that no modifications will be released for my vehicle, as they believe that no fault is present on my vehicle. My expectations are clearly in advance of what BMW believe they should be. BMW seem happy with the the X3 being noisier than other similar vehicles. [/QUOTE] Clive, it is sad to read BMW's official response to you. I thought being a premium brand they should have approached their loyal customers more wisely. Maybe we should ask them this: If they were so happy with the car in terms of noises, then why did they release the wing mirror TSB in their first model year? Apparently there are complaints worldwide re wind noise, and that TSB clearly wasn't a total solution ( I know because I had it done), but they are not ready to officially accept that there is a fault. |

I find that on motorway/highway surfaces which are course thereby inducing tyre noise, this is when hear significant tyre noise from other vehicles. This noise from other vehicles actually seems worse than from my X3.

What I still don't know is whether I'm more analytical and picky than those who say their cars are quiet or is my car more noisey than theirs? I know the demo 35D locally is worse than mine.

The latest is that BMW (not the dealer) confirm my car is performing as it should. If I were still driving 35,000 / year I'd be screaming for them to take the car back. My driving patterns have changed and I can live with the noise (just), fortunately performance, economy and space are as expected so all is not lost. It is a very shoddy design if it's really meant to be this noisy.

Today I picked up a 320d as my X3 is in for yet another warranty issue. The wind and traffic noise in the 320d is identical to my X3. It seems this is the new standard spec for BMW....

I'm getting headlight vertical aim errors. It could be software, they may simply re-program the car.
Before that I had a transfer case oil leak. Before that it was some saggy leather. Oh yes, wind noise too but that seems to be standard!

That sucks Mine goes in tomorrow for a replacement of a worn flocking that is causing the drivers side window to screech when it goes up and down and also for the recall on the passenger window regulator.

I have reached now 40,000 kms in 10 months, but still cannot get used to the idea that a BMW produces that wind noise starting from 80 km/h . I am now positive that the noise comes in through the window at the upper corner where the door meets the B pillar. Couple of weeks ago while on the highway I shoved some napkins to that area from inside between the door frame and the window , and the irritating noise was gone almost 80%. I took photos to show the service rep, however I was extremely busy since to bring it in. Sometimes I think of putting some insulation myself, but have not figured out yet how to do it.

With 8,500 miles no excessive wind or road noise. It's not a 5 series, but leaps and bounds quieter than most cars on the road.

I just pick up mine from dealer. I'd like to say there is no excessive wind noise now. My dealer installed the revised parts for both mirrors based on the TSB but no improvement and they did research and experiments then found one more part need to tighten the revised mirror base to housing. I had to wait for a month until that little part coming from Germany because it was not available in bmwna. I believe those little clips came from the upper 5, 6 or 7 models made in germany. Dealer didn't give me part numer. My loaner was a brand new 2013 X5 50i, which had a same wind noise. Strange...

Exactly, Clive. Do you think that area can be insulated without replacing the sealing?
