Following all of these discussions I contacted BMW Australia to request their position on 6NR here and this is the response:

I'm investigating retrofit options. Once it's clear there's one for the F25, we should organise an AU group buy.

There is at least one company already offering retrofit DIY kits for 6NR on X5s and X6s, but not yet for F series. I've requested an email when they become available and will obviously post details on this thread

To the Aussie guys, without wishing to state the obvious, make sure you order all of the prerequisites for 6NR, particularly 6NF which isn't part of the pro multimedia package

Genius! Do any of the guys that already have a media adapter notice it getting hot? My basic iPhone 4 adapter does make the phone warm if it's been plugged in for a while

Also waiting...
I got my BMW X1 delivered this week.
It's a June 2011 production model, however it was not possible to add 6NR since it was "not an option in Australia" I made sure to add all per-requisites such as USB Audio (6NF), iPhone 4 Media Cradle, Pro-Nav (609), Internet (614/615) etc and would be very keen to get access to 6NR through retro-fit. |

6NR Retrofit Done Successfully
I wasn’t able to order 6NR as my X3 was built in January 2011 and I was disappointed that BMW weren’t going to make it available as an accessory or a dealer retrofit (refer to long debate in this thread with the muppets at BMW UK). I got in contact with Patryk at BimmerTech who has done 6NR retrofits on other BMW models and they have recently started offering it on the F25 so I asked if I could get it done on my X3.
The answer was yes but as these guys don’t have any fitters in the UK it had to be part DIY (the wiring) and then BimmerTech do all of the coding remotely. It’s all fitted now, all working and a success. BimmerTech can also code unlocking DVD in motion which I also got done. Not having a fitter meant it was slightly more complicated than it would be in countries where BimmerTech team up with specialists to do the fitting and coding together, but Patryk really knows his stuff and the end result is all good and I recommend using BimmerTech. I wanted 6NR mostly for its potential rather than just what is available now but I have to say that I prefer the iPhone/iPod plug in (over using the woeful iDrive interface for browsing music) and the ability to stream video from an iPhone to the iDrive screen. I had a quick look at internet radio which worked well at home but I think it wouldn’t be that great on the move because of the lack of a 3G SIM. I’m also using it for Twiiter and Facebook – but not very often! I’ve posted some pictures below of my 6NR retrofit in action. Plug in iPhone calendar Web radio iPhone videos

+1 that would be nice. They tease you with Twitter (sign in, messages displayed) so you know it's possible to have email working the same way. In fact, where are all the new BMW apps????? It's been here since April and nothing has been added.

There's a documentary out there with their designers in which they mention their focus on Apple products -- baffling then why they're so lightly integrated into the vehicles. Just with 6NR, an option that can't be upgraded to, and key functions advertised don't work? Very confusing to me. I think they're missing out on a great selling point.

sfax, what happens if there's a software update from the dealer at a later service? Is your solution impacted by that at all?

Worst case scenario would be a forced software update as a result of a fault on the car before these activation codes become available. Then it would need another remote re-code. I'll update this thread if I hear from BimmerTech re. activation codes

Just my personal experience but this is why I did NOT order BMW apps. My wife has a 2011 mini and an iPhone 4. When we ordered it, we ordered the mini connected (which is similar to the BMW apps and probably just a derivative of the same software). To take full advantage of the interface, Mini requires you to buy the snap in adapter. The problem was, there was no adapter for the iPhone 4 at the time (eventhough the iPhone 4 had been out for a year). As such, the functionality was very limited and really not much different than the regular interface (pandora was the only good thing about it). BMW/Mini has been very slow to update any of the software, if at all. The interface is a bit buggy and not really user friendly (just a lot of little things that really could be improved, but I am a software developer so these smalls things may bother me more than others). Now add on top of this new iPhones coming out in conjunction with the typical cell phone life of 2 years at the most, and I see this as a never ending venture for BMW and constant compatibility headaches for the end user. Apple certainly gives no guarantees to not change their interface and remain compatible with what BMW puts out. Anyway, just my personal opinion and my experience. I realize it may be different for others.
What would be nice, is if BMW put out a SDK and let users develop their own apps. Then I could see this catching on. |

Brand new BMW owner (less than 24 hrs) here and I have a few questions about this option.
(Bit of a Rant and the value of forums like this!) First of all I purchased due to a major design issue on the US 2012/2013 Passat. After waiting many months for my top of the line diesel Passat to come in I learned the day before I was to pick up the vehicle that you can NOT put a roof rack on the car. I was religiously following two forums when a person posted that the owners manual states categorically No Roof Racks. We had asked repeatedly about this during the sales process and was told no problem. After reading the post I called the sales guy and he was like "really, it says that in the manual??" After a sleepless night I drove over to the dealership which just happens to sell BMWs as well.....saw the X3 with the rails and decided on the spot to drop the Passat and go with the 2013 X3 (it was even the right color). So to sum it up.....I'm a very happy camper and love the space in the X3 and the way it drives. On to my questions about the PlugIn: Has anyone found documentation on it and the features it provides? Does anyone know what the number next my cell strength bars means? When my iPhone is in the PlugIn I was lead to believe it would get connected to the diversity antenna to boost the signal, but I haven't seen any increase in strength. Has anyone else noticed this? Thanks in advance...a very happy BMW convert!

1) Only charge 2) Music 3) Media (not sure about this) 4) Media with fan 1) Only charges the iPhone, the connection to car works via Bluetooth for phone and music 2) Only charges the iPhone + listen to music as if connected to USB (IF you have the USB interface for iPod) 3) and 4) work with BMW Apps and should also allow you to show videos on the Navi screen, plus the BMW Apps services. iPhone doesn't have connection to external antenna, so no signal improvement with the base. The number close to the signal strength should be the number of music piece you're listening to in your phone/ipod. |
