Placement location of a sticker-type Toll Tag

Brand-new X3, and I'd like to hide the toll tag as much as possible. Any thoughts out there about putting it on the front windshield behind the black dots (frits)? Will the frits affect the operation of the tag? Thanks in advance.

I just ended up putting it out of my line of sight, was wondering the same thing about finding a better spot.

I'm in NC, and we have toll roads. I've learned that i don't need toll sticker in the front windshield at all, because the system can pick up the car by its registered license plate(s).

What is the benefit of another gadget on the windshield over the license plate(s) reading?

Are certain toll systems just don't have capability to do the license plate reads?

Or, the state's fear of fraud with just relying on the plate (eg. pickup truck)?

Depending on the Tolling authority, Toll rates for a "tag read" may be cheaper than for the "plate read".

I just assumed they are both "machine" read and processed.

Maybe "plate read" is more error prone (with speeders/accuracy ???) and requires human intervention.

You are correct - tags are machine read and so are the license plates. in cases where the license plate cannot be accurately recognized, they are reviewed by a human. whether a plate is read by a machine or a human, the Tolling authority may choose to charge a higher rate for plate reads to encourage tag use.

I've always put mine (NTTA Tag) to the upper left side (from the driver's perspective) of the windshield.

Mine is just behind my rear view mirror to where I never see it. Also, I used these from Amazon for my toll tag and my window registration sticker (TX) so it makes removing easier. I put black paper on mine, and then taped it to the front of the rearview mirror. It blends in and you'd never notice it from the front of the car, and you def can't see it from the inside.

The RFID readers are far more accurate than the license plate readers, as I found out a couple of years ago. Someone from out-of-state with the same plate numbers as mine was using our toll-road system here in Colorado and I got charged for their usage. Getting it cleared up was a real hassle -- I had to persuade them to assign a person to find the pictures and look at them to check the state of origin.

And, as mentioned, it's much cheaper, here at least, to use the RFID tags.

As long as the RFID tag is behind glass, the readers can pick them up. I don't think they'd work if they are shielded by metal, though. HPH

NC Quick Pass is telling me the window sticker transponder will not work on the X3 (other BMWs too) because of its enhanced windshield. Based on this thread I gather it does work. Any further updates from people using a window sticker transponder on their X3? Where did you locate it? Thanks.

I put my sticker on a black piece of vinyl wrap, so you can't see that it's a toll tag, and it's on the passenger side of the rear view mirror. Can't even see it from the outside. Much stealth.

I installed it under the cover behind the screen. There's no visual obstruction anywhere in the car, and it doesn't require any adhesive. It fits perfectly and stays secure even during high-speed turns thanks to the silicone cover. I personally love it. For your reference.

Although NC Quick Pass said the window sticker transponder would have interference from the BMW windshield, I installed and tested it and it works fine. I placed it about 1" away of the lower right passenger side corner of the electronics above the mirror. That's about 3" from the top of the windshield.
