Hi all!
First off, thank you for having me here, I am new to the BMW world but not new to cars, bikes, or wrenching on them.
Long story short, I was gifted a 2010 BMW X3 with a tick over 158k miles on it. I got some of the parts, and did a bit of work on it. Changed the spark plugs, ignition coils, air filter, and cabin filter. Next up will be the transfer case actuator, transfer case fluid change, oil/filter change, and rear diff fluid change. I got the Foxwell scan tool, and here are some of the error codes that came up, so I am looking for some advice/help on how to proceed. ZKE Base Module 5 Fault 2 DME Engine Electronics Fault 6 LWS Steering Angle Sensor Fault 2 DSC/DXC Dynamic Stability Control Plus Fault 1 VGSC Transfer Box Fault 2 RDC Tire Pressure Monitor Fault 2 OC Seat Occupancy Passenger fault 1 ZAE multiple restraint system Fault 1 TELEFON Telematic Control Unit Fault 2 IM Light Module Fault 5 So where do I go from here? Thank you all… |

Hi and welcome, if you did not do already, clear all faults, remove battery for 10 minutes and do another check after a test drive for remaining faults?
Are there any lights warning/faults visible on the dashboard? No lights are already a good sign….. If you drive curves is there a rattling in the rear? Depending on above I would check the vtg motor to see if the plastic gear is worn out, if yes, turn it 180 degree or replace it… add some grease too, not too much. Also replace the vtg oil wirh original vtg oil… Afterwards teach/calibrate the vtg motor and resett the oil with your tester (assuming it has those functionalities) I dont know your tester but found out that various tester show different results, one shows issues and the other doesn’t…. Maybe you can cross check…. Good luck Ralph |

After you removed the battery and reconnect and restart the engine you will have to calibrate the steering wheel sensor, just turn the steering wheel fully left and right until light goes off… no tester needed

Thank you so much for the advice! There is a clunking sound coming from the rear of the vehicle when slowing to a stop or making turns. I have already ordered the new transfer case actuator, transfer case fluid and rear diff fluid from FCP Euro. I will disconnect the battery and let it sit, then reconnect it and go lock-to-lock with the steering wheel to recalibrate the sensor.
Yes, there are lights on the dash. The brake light, 4x4 light, and check engine light are all on. Last edited by AntD77; 03-17-2026 at 09:53 AM.. |
