Active cruise control installation possible after purchase?

Hello BMW X3 community,

I purchased a new 2022 X3 xDrive30i a week ago. Somehow I didn’t pay enough attention to cruise control feature in the car and realized just yesterday the difference between dynamic vs active cruise control. Mine has only got dynamic.

Do you know if it is possible to upgrade to active cruise control after purchase? Does anyone have experience?

Thanks much.

It will be expensive and a lot of work, which a BMW dealer is unlikely to undertake. So, it’s either diy or find someone with the skills and tools to do it for you.

Driving Assistant Professional (5AU) is the option that provides what you’re looking for, and it needs both hardware i.e radar, appropriate cameras, control unit, wiring harnesses for these, and programming. If you already have 360 cameras that’s one less thing on you list, although it does still need the additional windscreen mounted camera, and the instrument panel driver attention camera.

Short answer; no. You are better off selling and then purchasing one with the feature.

Problem is the option is only available on the X3 M40i and above and not available on the base trim. So you would need to start with the M40i to even have the driving assistant pro package available for an additional $1700.

We had the same issue with our previous 2014 X1 - no cruise control from the factory. Luckily, we caught this before purchase. One dealer said it couldn’t be installed while another dealer said it could be done with an up-charge of about $1,500 USD back in 2013. We went with the dealer that could do it. They ordered the necessary parts from Germany and added the cruise-control in one day just before delivery to us. You need to speak with the lead mechanic at a few BMW dealers and see if one of them can help you.

Was that adaptive cruise control as in Driving Assistant Professional as in the latest G01 ?

The sheer amount of work would be massive and may include a new instrument panel with driver attention camera, new windscreen sensor pack plus trim, new steering wheel buttons, new radar module and lower grille, new cameras in the side mirrors plus new trim, a new front kidney grill with camera, new DAP control module, additional wiring harness for these things, plus programming and calibration.

You’re absolutely correct. My particular case 10 years ago involved not having any cruise control at all to what would be the equivalent of “dynamic cruise control” today. Sorry for the confusion. I agree that upgrading from dynamic to adaptive CC would be a major and expensive project that might not be possible in the OP’s vehicle.

I had adaptive cruise fitted retrospectively to my 2019 M40i about 18 months ago by a specialist in the UK ... no issues, superb !

Unsure re USA but it is possible certainly with my age of X3 .. in my case an M40i which I love and have had no issues with. Adaptive is something I use every day tbh !

Wow. Was it just adaptive cruise or the full suite? (Lane centering, traffic jam assist, etc)

What’s the impact on new car warranty if not fitted by a BMW dealer?

Would’ve thought of this, but unfortunately not available for BMWs.

Tesla’s autopilot beta is scary enough for me, I’d trust an open source community project even less. My open source smart home controller is great, but I hardly trust it to change my thermostat reliably let alone drive my car.

I just thought this lane centering tech has been out long enough that there are cheap aftermarket solutions, such is the same for blind spot monitors and parking sensors.

I prefer to have lane centering than adaptive cruise control, but somehow both are mutually dependent and you can't get one without the other as a feature, hence many cars do not have lane centering and adaptive cruise as standard. If there is a way to just get lane centering without cruise control that would be great.

First, I ordered a xdrive 30i, once I learned that it won't have the adaptive cruise control, I canceled the order and ordered a m40i with drive assistance pro package.
My 2017 rav4 has it. Can't live without it.

Those are two completely different categories of assistance. One is mere notification, whereas other is active steering intervention. It’s easy to see why the latter type would be hard to retrofit but also needs to be very precise.

I attempted to remove the front bumper to install the short range front radar when I came across this circle right in the center. Is this a front parking sensor?

Let me get this straight. I have the following parts:
- Short range front radar
- Wiring, protection and bracket for radar
- Replacement lower front grill with radar cut out

This is all I need to just get Active Cruise with Stop and Go (no active steering)

Doesn’t look like a parking sensor as these are external on the bumper.

i'm having the same requirement to get active cruise control added.
My car is having 360 Degree camera system with parking assist which has auto parking and auto back up.

I sense there should be some possibility upgrade with less cost as 360 cameras are already there with cruise control and other safety features.

With whom i have to follow up and connect with in USA to get this done ?

This chart shows the hardware you need for the different driver assist functions, including option SA5DF.

AFAIK the camera used is KAFAS, not the 360 cameras, and it requires the appropriate additional radar and control module hardware plus coding. It will also require the appropriate wiring harness, a different lower front grille to accommodate the front radar module, and steering wheel control buttons.

I suspect you won't find a BMW dealer that will attempt a retrofit.
