Why do I keep getting the low coolant indicator although I topped it up recently?

BMW X3 2008

I got the low coolant indicator a few weeks ago and I topped up the coolant and it was fine. But today after auto car wash and driving home, it started making loud roaring noise with the low coolant indicator ON. I almost had reached my car park, I quickly parked it and turned it off. Has it got anything to do with washing the car? Is there a coolant leakage?
Should I top it again? Can I fix the leak myself, if there is any? If not, how much does it cost?
