New m40i hit on dealer lot - buy or not?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com It was repaired and is equipped the way I want (ZDA, ZDB, etc) but nagging thought that I should pass even though would mean waiting, ordering 2019 and costing possibly $6K+ more than what I have negotiated. Background- car was on dealer lot and car wash service backed their truck into the passenger side. Dealership filed a claim against company and their insurance paid for fixing. Both front and rear passenger doors were replaced and painted to match. I inspected it and saw a drip line on the door lip that they are buffing out. What would you do? Edit- planning to keep long term (purchase, not lease). Would value drop considerably if it is noticed or on CarFax that it had been in an 'accident'? Anyone have free CarFax service that I could PM VIN? Thanks. |

That is terrible to hear. Honestly, I would reject the car; the dealer should be the ones bending over backward for you, not just repairing it and hoping you take it with possible loss in value.
If it were me, I would request a 2019 X3 and get an M-Sport wheel for the same negotiated price as for the 2018 model. |

I'd reject the vehicle as well and order a 2019 X3 M40i, which comes with the proper steering wheel (710). Especially since this will be long-term ownership and not a 2 year lease. Unless, of course, you absolutely need a new vehicle at this moment and/or the extra cost of the 2019 would make it a no-go, then maybe a short-term lease deal could make it work for you?

I agree with the above. Why should you compromise? If both doors were replaced it was a bit more than just a bump and dent. Get exactly what you want with no history of damage.

Just to clarify- I knew it was damaged and repaired before I went to look at it. It was the only 2018 within several hundred miles that had Driver's Assistance Plus

I’m still unclear why your dealer can’t order you a car when other people are having dealers place orders STILL with zda/zdb? Either all our dealers are lying to us placing orders and we’re going to get screwed, or your dealer is incompetent?

It's easy for the dealer to say yes. It's another thing to actually have it done |

Ah, that makes more sense. If you can wait, a 2019 would have higher resale and the M-Sport wheel. That's the one thing I wish I had gotten on my 2018.

The Ordering and Pricing Guides for the 2019 G01 are in the first 'Sticky' at the top of the forum. Jason moved the 2018 version back down to all of the threads, replacing it with the 2019 versions.

You're basically getting an additional 10% off it sounds. Everyone here is going to say avoid the car, as we mostly all bought and expected new, but it's up to you whether or not you think that's a sufficient discount for the risk and/or devaluation. If you're not set on having a new car then it seems like a fair deal if you are getting a normal negotiated new price + an additional 6k

I wouldn't buy it without, at a minimum, having it inspected by a reputable body shop (not the shop that did the work) - with the accident pictures. There is no reason you should not be 100% sure about the extent of the damage and the quality of repair. Then it is up to you to determine if the discount is sufficient to cover 1) risk that there is anything about the car that is only 99% perfect and 2) the discount you will need to give the buyer down the road when you sell it. I bought a CPO'd low mileage M5 back in 2005 and I skipped the body shop check - that came back to bite me when I sold the car a few years later and it turned out that it was a bondo-fest from some accident. I got crushed on sale, even though the car was perfect for me.

In my opinion the OP shouldn’t even be considering anything less then the ordered car he originally wanted. There’s gotta be a dealer somewhere that will help him out. Plenty of people have recently posted on here that they’ve ordered a 2018 M40i with zda/zdb and all the dealer had to do was call BMW to override it. All the dealers he’s calling seem to be small and completely out of allocation and are just blowing smoke and blaming it on a parts shortage that doesn’t even exist anymore. Keep trying and find a dealer that HAS allocation and get EXACTLY what you want. At any rate, I sent him the information for the guy who helped me with my order. Here’s to hoping my guy can help him out!

Run away from that car as fast as possible...Any repair filed through an insurance claim will most definitely be on the carfax. Although the repair may look good as new, you will still be taking a hit on the resale value of the car in the long run.
Order a 2019 and negotiate the dealer to honour the discount proportionately.. |

When can a 2019 order be placed?
Do dealers have to wait for allocation? Need to understand how all that works since this is my second deal gone south! |

About a month after I bought my x1, a lady pulled out and side-swiped me. There was damage to the front fender and passenger front door. I used the body shop the dealer uses. They replaced the door and repaired and repainted the front fender. They did a great repair job. I checked the car fax on the car before closing the claim with the insurance company and nothing was ever posted. 3 years later when I traded the car, nothing was posted and the dealer never mentioned anything when inspecting the vehicle when I traded for my x3.
I guess what I’m saying is that if you feel you can get a better deal and are comfortable with the repair, it might be worth considering. The dealer can pull the car fax for you and share the report with you. Just be sure the vin matches the car you are actually considering. If it shows up, it will affect the value. Good luck with your decision. |
