Pretty much all they cared about was value for money, which BMWs aren't known for nor what makes them desirable. I didn't even consider anything else when I got mine. Here are my views: myopic I know but I am what I am
Infiniti/Lexus: just boring Cadillac: nope Audi: boring, expensive VW and VW reliability has been a joke in my short experience Alfa: I want something that drives not looks pretty broken down on the side of the road Volvo: maybe would have considered. Have a soft spot for them since it was my first car but boring to drive. Always will be. |

I really like Motorweek and don't know the credibility of cars.com. Maybe they influenced them but who really sets a price limit on a new car test at $53k?
In my mind the top three are the BMW, Volvo and Audi. |

It’ll be interesting how this same test comes out for 2019 when the x3 will feature standard safety systems. BMW does have to be more competitive today in terms of standard features, design and tech with so many other great offerings. Honestly, I think the new RDX would have one this particular comparison if it had been available at the time.

I saw this episode and was surprised by it, too.
I seriously considered the XC60 -- it would've replaced a previous-gen XC60 we really loved. But the XC60 coming in first in this MW comparo? I don't understand it. One thing I noticed in the story that might have affected the ratings was a comment about how the reviewer -- I forget if it was the "buyer" or the cars.com folks -- loved the XC60 infotainment. Volvo's Sensus system has generally been reviewed as complex and slow. My wife hated. And I think there's no comparison between iDrive and Sensus. Also, everyone who drives the XC60 (including MW) notes its stiff ride. Again, something I think was missed in the calculation of the "winner".

Best part of the review is how the everyday buyer they interviewed had an XC60, liked it, but stated it had reliability problems on camera. And yet the XC60 comes in first place...

Strange. I checked, and with currency conversion (obviously isnt the only thing that goes into the price change) my build came to about 47k usd (62k cdn).
Either the exchange rates are out of wack, or something else is going on. My build is base plus ALL the safety features, m sport trim and leather interior, which the dealer threw in. but that shouldn't equate to a 50k+ price. Am I wrong here? These reviews sometime seem so squewed... |

I wouldn't have purchased an X3 if it wasn't for the M40i option. In that particular field, the Volvo and not reviewed RDX would have probably been more choice.

It was a ridiculously bad (or biased) review. The entire world of auto reviewers disagrees with them. Maybe it was designed to make the anti-BMW crowd happy. When looking at overall value (resale, cost, sportiness, looks, utility, safety, who could argue that the BMW X3 isn't at the top of this list of cars?
As for the comment that only the M40i version would be tops in that field...that's also a tad bit over the top. The base 30i is every bit as comfortable, safe and good looking as the M40i...just $4k cheaper all other things being equal. Safety has far more to do with how a car is built and structured (front/side collisions, visibility, brakes, handling in sticky situations) than some of the very expensive gadgets out there now. And while we can all agree that the 30i is less sporty than it's 6 cylinder brother it is more a better overall small sport utility (combination of quickness and ride handling) than just about any of the other cars in that comparison. Maybe some of you haven’t actually driven the XC60 or looked at the RX very closely. The Audi is a true competitor so between it and the X3 that seems like a personal choice of tastes. The rest are really not all that compelling.

I've driven the new xc60 and it's great. Especially the T8. Maybe would have bought it if it wasn't for the little bit boring feeling of being so common in Sweden. The X3 is pretty damn good as well though. So very close.

I test drove most of the competition and nothing came close to the m40i - i was terribly disappointed by the sq5 and velar, impressed by the Volvo, wasn’t as smitten as I should be been w the Stelvio, etc etc. The m40i just did everything so well and did it at a price that I would consider a steal. Like others here I probably wouldn’t have considered a non m40i but I’d never knock the x3. Im sure it’s fantatic as well.

Yes, but the point is that Acura/Honda's 4 cylinder turbo is so bad on mpg. BMW's turbos seem to do much better than that, whether 4 or 6 cylinders. I have a 2016 340 and average over 25 mpg on mixed city/highway mpg. BMWs are just more efficient.

The new RDX is quite nice, and at $48K for an advance model, it can compete with BMW on features for a lot less money. But I didn't find it particularly exciting. The styling is ambitious but I have a feeling it will not age gracefully.
Overall, it's a big improvement over older RDX generations and it's clear they are aiming towards BMW, but some of the details still say "Honda". And for whatever reason, Acura seems incapable of good wheel designs. The wheels on the advance model are just plain boring and not worthy of the vehicle or trim level. It's a pity new owners are experiencing poor gas mileage. I had a first generation RDX and it was also lousy at gas mileage. Last couple BMWs I have owned did better than the rating by at least 2-4mpg. I have an M40i on order and I am optimistic I can see 28-30mpg with a lot of highway driving, based on my experience with previous BMWs. |

I puked in my mouth a little watching this. Reviewers in this video share none of my values.. or at least, if they were shared, the effed up the priority of them. While $$ has a place, quibbling over some hundreds of dollars on a $50k+ car is self defeating. The only thing I hate spending $50k+ on a car is spending $50k+ and not being entirely happy with my purchase. Anyway.. 'nough said. I agree with all of you guys. ;-) |
