Rear brake pads- questions

Hi
my service indicator says to replace my rear brake pads in 2000km. Is this an actual condition measurement, or a time/distance based calculation?

And...is it worth going non-genuine (cost/dust/noise/wear)?

And...how come the rears, and not the fronts? In all my previous cars IIRC, the fronts wore first.

My car's done 40,000km.
thanks

It's a condition measurement.

It's never worth buying after market for brakes.
OEM brake material has been extensively tested to work with the material of the rotor. Mismatching materials worsens brake performance. Not to mention safety issues on OEM can be addressed with a recall.

Rears might wear out faster as self driving stuff uses mostly rears.

Thanks Raphael

if I do go down the non-OEM route, does anyone know if these would be compatible with the brake life detection? Or could it cause faults to display?

Not 100% sure but had Brembo brakes on my M3 and the wear sensor fit right in no issues.

I ran power stops on my hellcat with OEM rotors and while they didn’t perform quite the same for hard driving, under normal driving they were fine. With no dust and they helped rotor life compared to OEM semi metallic . No, they don’t “work” as good for hard driving but they actually wear the rotors a lot less. I can’t speak for BMW but I had them on 4 scat packs and 1 hellcat . We need someone to try and let us know lol
