And this is why you shouldn't buy your kids sports cars. Very sad, both died - a 22 and 23 year old. Authorities say they hit a center median at a high rate of speed and went airborne. My heart goes out to their parents.
EDIT - It is an assumption on my part that the parents bought the car.

I used to live in the Toms River area. So sorry for the family. On your supposition, I do not understand why someone with zero driving skill can go out and purchase a 200 MPH car because they have a basic operators license and money. If I had 10 million I couldn't purchase and fly off in a business jet with 60 hours and a basic pilots license. It's insane.

As a friend once said, people are taught how to operate a motor vehicle but NOT how to drive... Sad for the family.

While this is terrible for both families, glad that nobody else was injured/killed. Being a parent, I feel for them. My son, who is only twelve, cannot wait to drive. I’ve told him years ago and it’s drilled in his brain, “you want to drive very fast? Go to the track.”

Devastating to the families of both involved. I can't agree more with the statements above. Just because a person can afford the machine and has a foot to push the pedal, doesn't mean they should. Responsibility and restraint are not pushed enough in society. Agree wholeheartedly with F30 above, at least if they risked their own lives, no one else was injured in the poor decision making.
Removing the human element of emotion here.....based off the photos in the slide show: If the incline that sent them airborne, is the dirt area where the two police officers are standing.....WOW!!! Curious as to the rate of speed they were traveling. That's quite a distance and one helluva trajectory! Makes me wonder if they hit the building on the way up or on the way back down. I'm so thankful I was exposed to operating equipment at a young age. First the riding lawn mower, then go karts, dirt bikes, farm equipment, etc. I had thousands of hours of vehicle operating experience before I even drove a car. Then my parents told me I had to work a job and pay for my first vehicle. At the time I was annoyed since many of my high school friends were given cool cars and I bought a $3000 Jeep. Now I realize the blessing I had, because based on my experience with dirt bikes, atvs and go karts as a kid, my first car would've likely been put into a tree without that experience.

The cynical Libertarian in me immediately thinks of Darwin and personal accountability. The progressive Liberal in me thinks of a tiered driving system with track time requirements and higher consequences for infractions as you move up the automotive ladder. I definitely think there should be Hp to weight ratio limits for operators under a certain age (maybe 25), unless a set of more stringent driver's training obligations have been met. |

Absolutely. My parents were not my friends growing up, and now I'm very glad they weren't.

As someone sub 25 with not even a blemish on my driving record I am firmly against the first part of this statement. As for the more stringent drivers training I think that would be fine. Bottom line is some shouldn't be behind the wheel of something so powerful without any experience. I was driving my step dad's '05 viper and '65 cobra kit car around the time I got my license when he would allow me to do so. Now in my 09 M3 if anything I think it lacks power haha. All ages have some shitty drivers, fair way would be the more stringent drivers test in my opinion. |
