Panoramic moon roof leaking

just picked up my 22 x3m40i friday and this morning noticed water dripping from mic port above passenger seat. it dripped out a lot at first then it stopped even after driving through much rain. was this stuck under moonroof somehow? what do i do. my dealer said to bring in but i dont want to drive that far and have them tear my whole car apart. wtf. this is so maddening!!

update: dealer thinks its a kinked drain port or something with a seal. Scheduled to drop off Saturday morning for a fix and a loaner. so frustrated at this point with a brand new car having sunroof issues. lets hope its an easy fix

yeh i know was just hoping others had issue and was easy fix, but i took the hour and a half drive this am dropped off into loaner and then back to work. I am praying its something simple and not a new sunroof needed which would surely take months at this point. Just picked up the car last friday the 17th so barely have been able to drive it. Just super frustrated at this point that a brand new car leaks water. Never in my life have i had that happen in a car and ive owned many brands over the years. ugh

It’s good you fixed it after all

have a sunroof too on a 2020 model. I have got 2 questions:

1) Does the 2022 model sunroof open completely sliding backwards over the second half split of the glass? In mine, only the front split tilts open a bit just enough to fit a finger through the gap.

2) I have heard this reset mentioned before but can you tell how do you perform a sunroof reset? Just incase I need to someday?

Thanks

it does slide back to open over the back glass.. and the reset is done by holding the button in for like 20 seconds and keep holding til it fully closes after doing som adjustments etc. get in car and push button but dont start the car. just get into run mode basically and do that. should help.

Get them to give it a shower with a pressure hose at the dealers and find the leaking point. I will be surprised if the windshield already detached this early on a ‘22 model.

I finally figured how to get my sunroof open fully by pushing back the open button and holding it until the roof moves all the way back. Thanks

There is a bulletin out there for the seal which causes wind noise and water leaking

Have them check to see if the sunroof drain is clogged. Shouldn’t be given its age.

Nah!
Sunroofs are awesome! For a sedan maybe you don’t need it since it’s only half roof but for these SAVs you need one.

I test drove SAVs without sunroofs and I can tell you the difference is literally between night and day. I mean I was searching for an X3 or a Range Rover with full sunroof and sports seats. That’s how bad I wanted it.
The option to have a bright or a dark cabin should not be taken away from us, nah!

The OP thinks the leak might be from the windshield, there’s nothing bad about a good functioning sunroof.

yeh the drains are good so it seems. I have tested them and all drain water like supposed to. so honestly have no idea. I dont think its the windshield anymore either i tested it last night with water for awhile and no leak. I tend to the think i have a bad sunroof cassette or a seal somewhere. just hoping they find it this time. I dont wanna hear we couldnt replicate the leak again. if keeps happening will make a stink with BMW NA on a buyback and get something else. Didnt spend all this money to have a water damaged car.

I’ve seen people use a type of smoke under pressure in the cabin to show leaks on the outside. It’s non destructive unlike water.

I had a similar issue on our '22. The passenger front corner of the headliner would get wet during extended heavy rains. It didn't show up until 6 months after having the X3. It ended up being an obstructed drain hose that didn't back up to the sunroof until after extended heavy rains. The dealership fixed the drain and no further issues. The drains appeared to be working ok, but the partial blockage allowed them to back up over time. The dealer said they see this fairly regularly due to foam expanding and pinching the hoses.

sounds exactly like my issue. I am gonna guess that is what is going on with mine. It only happens when its really heavy rain. it then soaked the headliner and also was dripping down onto the floor. i hope they fix this and all will be well, since i love the car otherwise.
