urgent gearbox checkup

2022 x3m40. I got an urgent message that my car P gear was malfunctioning. It says to hold the start/stop for 3 seconds to prevent roll-away. This message was presented on my phone through the app. There is nothing in the car or through ID7 with this alert.

Just seems weird to me. If I didn’t have the app to alert me my car would roll down a hill?? Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Anyone ever get any random alerts in the My BMW App? The car is all good so I guess I’m gonna ignore and chalk it up to a misfire.

That sure seems like a great idea, especially since you’re under warranty and getting it checked out is free of charge.

I just can’t image a car not engaging park gear and the car not throwing a big warning to the driver. Instead we rely on a free app they not all owners use to let you know the car might roll away. Has to be an error….

I don’t disagree but worth getting any codes read. Could be the shifter itself.

Got an exactly same message today on the app only. No warnings in the car. Taking it in for a checkup tomorrow. I am overdue for some body repair anyway. Will report back what they tell me.

Due microchips issues BMW will use postal letters to notifify critical warnings like your brakes don’t work futher, the seat belts are broken or your airbags are inminent go to explose. Make sure you check your postals before go to drive

Just got the same on the app, 22 M40i, 10k miles. Already scheduled for the first service next week. But based on the feedback on the forum looks like someone might have introduced a bug on a software release.

Just as I suspected … waste of time! $40.00 in Uber fees to and from work and 2 extra hours waiting at the dealership because 8 hours isn’t enough to run a diagnostic. They couldn’t find anything relating to the Urgent Gearbox Checkup.

It’s a bug in the app.

Just got the car from the service. They did find the fault in the car system so it wasn't just an app glitching, but they are saying there nothing mechanically wrong with the gear box. They are attributing it to a software glitch in car computer or possible a module sensor misfire, eventhough the module also seems to pass the diagnostics. BMW is recommending to ignore the first message. If the message repeats they would replace the sensor module.

Luckly didn't cost me anything except not having a car for a half day.

I 'discussed vividly' that point with Audi for my GF car some time back. How is it possible that every car you have in one day takes the whole day. Does it really have to be hooked up to a diagnostic machine all day? He said yes.

I left it there - stupid is as stupid does ...

I just got this error popup this morning... but everything seems to be driving well. I'll take it in when I can just to be safe, but probably not a big deal.

Also, my BMW dealership will drop me off to wherever I need to go within 10-15 miles and pick me back up.

Hi BMW friends,

A quick update for this post. Anyways, I changed my mind and dropped off my 230i to the dealer on 03/04 10AM. Today at 03/09 1PM I received a call from my services advisor regarding of the check up. The dealer said it was a good decision to check the car because now it needs to repair the gearbox shifter, and the dealer has already ordered the part. The part will be delivered on 03/14 and it will take 3 days to complete the repair which will be around 03/17. I will keep us posted with more details such as the quote of the parts.

Thanks,
230i driver
