I tried to call my daughter yesterday by telling BMW voice to call Anne (I have Anne as a contact on my phone so it doesn't ask which Anne and which phone to call). The response was "This function is not available when Carplay is active". Do I need to disable Carplay, and how do I do that? I notice when I get into the car my phone lights up with Caroplay.

You have to use Siri from CarPlay.

Instead of doing a quick press of the 'microphone' button on the steering wheel to use the BMW voice assistant, if you hold the button down it should activate Siri instead which can make phone calls and stuff more easily. You should hear the Siri "ding ding" noise to know if it worked. It may even show some visual feedback on the screen with CarPlay.

If you went into the settings on your phone and disabled Siri when the phone is locked then it may not work unless you unlock your phone.

Long press to use Siri. You clicked the button and used the BMW system versus Siri for carplay.
