Really expensive hatch backs do not - at least not at BMW?s desired scale. Ask VW (golf R) and Subaru (WRX 5 door).

Yeah, the consumer is actually to blame here. Too many people buy crossovers and small SUVs when they should be buying a hatch. I know, I made the mistake myself. I needed a larger car for work and bought a Subaru crosstrek (very underwhelming), quickly realized my horrible decision and bought a golf R 4 months later. I do admit missing the clearance for going offroad (plenty of desert in AZ) but I, like most Americans, did it so infrequently I just figured I would rely on a friend with a truck (also plenty of those in AZ
). I attempted to buy and import a M140i considering there was a BMW dealer just south of the border 200 miles from me but the nuisance of attempting to comply with EPA and DOT standards, even though I tried explaining the same exact engine/chassis exists in a U.S. model, proved too difficult. So too bad Americans don't buy hatches, they have better driving dynamics, similar cargo capacity, and are generally cheaper than crossovers. BMW didn't get a sale from me because they didn't even offer an option I would consider but VW does. Would have much preferred a M140i though.
