They must have done the math to feel that the net increase in customers would be worth the additional dev, marketing, education, training, certification costs.

Everyone said the X6 was going to be a failure. While that may be true if you're just looking at the total number of sales, you can bet BMW made a ton of money. Low development and manufacturing costs and charge a $5-7k premium over the X5 for what is essentially the same car with a different shell. You don't need to be a mathematician to see the huge monetary benefits BMW is reaping.
