Why didn't Bmw include this when the car first came out? The technology was obviously available.
Whether the new idrive is better or not, personally it would piss me off to get a new 2020 car for the idrive to become outdated 2 months later when the technology was available in the first place.

Usually has to do with supply chain management of parts or software/hardware testing not always lining up with the desired release of vehicle upgrades (LCI, face lift, etc). For example, my early build '17 F80 M3 came with ID5, but late '17 or early '18 models came with ID6. IIRC, ID6 came on new vehicles in a short 9 month window or so, as a stop-gap between ID4 and ID6. However, the ID5 hardware was the same as ID6, so those with ID5 could easily code to the new ID6 interface - which I did.
Now why BMW was not ready to jump straight to ID6 software from ID4 even though the hardware was ready to go seems like either poor planning or bad luck with testing....
