Been listening to rap since 90s and it has changed quite a bit. A lot of these so-called mumble rap artists and others are just putting out mainstream albums for money; there doesn't seem to be anything lyrically provocative like Tupac and so many other rappers before.

However, I can't say ALL of modern rap artists are shit. The most influential and my all-time favorite as of today is Kendrick Lamar. His Good Kid M.A.A.D City album drew me in so hard with an amazing storytelling about his life. He can paint a canvas with his lyrics and take you back to Compton to show you his life. And his music videos are the hallmarks of a true artist--just so much going on.

He definitely doesn't glorify any of the drug & alcohol use such as today's modern rappers and instead he pretty much is trying to uplift the young, black generation of our time to do something about their lives. Give him a listen guys. Not all rap artists' today suck.
