Very sorry to hear this. Last year when taking the Bullitt with Michi PS4 to get the Nokian Hakkas mounted I had a similar scare. It was 15*F but dry roads... and the Mustang slid off into a bean field. No damage, but scared the crap out of me. Summer tires don't do well in the cold, and they simply don't work *at all* when there's snow on the road.
I'm having the Oregon dealer install Hakkas on the X3 when I take delivery in a few weeks.
