I ended up taking out and cleaning out the VANOS sensors - one was particularly dirty. At least for once, access to the sensors is easy and the process was fairly painless.

Excellent information, I unfortunately broke a defective vanos. (bolts). but after replacing the vanos with new ones, I got the code "130304 - VANOS, escape: control failure, blocking of the camshaft"
the mechanic solved it, but he never told me how he did it.
