It seems to me that the cover "latches" into place by design. When you fully close the cover, the forward end drops and latches for a tighter hold. I have found that pushing back on the silver tab on the cover releases the hold. Then you push back. Easy and effortless. Doing this, I have no problems opening and closing and it seems a clever design.
