A few more thoughts:

1. Perhaps BMW is retiring the 30e in the US to save their remaining allotment of federal tax credits for the coming i4 and iX to make those vehicles more enticing to potential buyers?
2. They had to do a major interior refresh. Many vehicles will be getting iDrive 8 over the next few years and the x3 was sporting a very old interior compared to the rest of the BMW lineup. If they didn't update to the latest interior the X3 would be two generations behind most of the lineup by the time of redesign -- and the X3 is their best seller in the US. Some of the competitors in this space have some really fantastic interiors that made the current X3 look somewhat dated, too (I think a great example here is the Mercedes GLB).
