It was also a feature of 2014 X3's as I had one. Just out of interest, and only because you said you didn't know you had this feature, (i.e. remote switch for tailgate on drivers door switch pack) given the switch to open the rear tailgate is situated just forward of the window switches - could it be possible you activated this switch instead of the window? Just a thought and fully prepared for you to say it definitely wasn't this.
For the record, I've had my 2019 X3 for 2 months now and except for 3 times when the tailgate opened just after I got the car, due to my having the unprotected fob in my pocket, since I purchased a cover for the fob, it has never happened since.
