I have had 2 4WD pickups and 3 AWD subaru's. At the end of the day. Good snows are as good as it gets for AWD. Ground clearance make is difficult (but not impossible to get through more than 8" of Snow and foresters hav about the best clearance and an AWD at least as good as BMW's (I'll be charitable here). A pickup will get at least 16" and possibly 20" If you are looking for more than 8" to maybe 10". Get a 4WD truck..seriously.
Ask me if I ever got my trucks stuck in 18"...yea...
