Seems like they are not a legal or legislative requirement. The requirement is to pass EURO 6, however manufacturers see fit.

I suppose you could rip it off and see if it passes

Mine will be coming off regardless

CATS and DPF’s are a requirement whether the car can pass an MOT or not. I guess the OPF will follow suit soon enough?
