The approach depends on the depth of the scratch.

As a rule of thumb, if you can't feel it with your fingernail then it should polish out with some compound that doesn't contain any fillers, megiuars ultimate compound is what I use, preferably with a machine polisher or attachment for a battery drill to save your arms.

If your nail can feel it but doesn't catch on it then it will likely need to be wet sanded before compounding.

If your nail catches on it then it will likely need repainting.
