The 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer was replaced by the Ferrari 512 introduced in 1976. The 512BB remained off-limits to Americans. Unusually, the power output dropped slightly to 360 hp, although the usable torque increased. And now the designation system of displacement per cylinder was replaced by approximate total displacement with a "12" for the flat-12, following the pattern of the V-8 cars.
929 512BBs were built from 1981 to 1984, when it was replaced by the 512BBi with fuel injection. Some 1,007 512BBi cars were built from 1981 to 1984. The 512BBi would be succeeded by the Testarossa with its dramatic new styling.
