Your iDrive may say brakes are due but it's worthless. Only a visual inspection will do. If the car does not shimmy when you stop, then you really just need to know how much pad life is left. At 3mm you should start planning for new. Above that you should just monitor them. New pads are about 10mm.
Oil pan leaks are common and it is a huge job on these cars. Even if you found the rare competent mechanic who does that sort of stuff for friends it will cost $1,200 or more. But it's not an emergency usually.
The valve covers on these cars are plastic, so they do crack. But like Pungo, whenever someone posts these dealer repair estimates it just feels like robbery when I know how much it would cost me to do that stuff myself. Most any 10 year old German car will need these sorts of things. There comes a point where it's just economically crazy to own one if you don't DIY.
