I have disable ASD on my m40i.
I can assure you that the valve is dependent with the driving mode.(you can ear it when you switch between the diffrent driving modes ) and it is on/off valve.
Eco : closed
comfort : closed
Sport individual : open (even if it is setup all in comfort, so you can drive your car in comfort mode but with open valve.
Spot/sport+: open.
Another thing has to be said, the opening of the valve is not depedant with the revs.
Valve with remain closed during the cold start and will open when it is finished (30s)
