I worked in Amsterdam for two months back when I was in university. My dinner consisted of racing off the bus at 4:45 to make it to the small store that shut at 5pm and buy a little gouda cheese, some bread, bottle of wine and a large milk chocolate bar.
Pretty much every night Monday to Thursday, that was the routine. I'd go out for dinner on the weekends or would travel somewhere else since flights were dirt cheap.

Oh...and a reasonable bottle of red was like 5 Euro or something. Ridiculously cheap.

dude the refrigerated meatballs are injected with curry-ketchup, paired with the 49 cent beer it's actually a pretty decent tasting meal
it's no michelin star but for less than the price of two mcdoubles you can't complain
