What is the cost of updating at a dealer? (2014 X3 Msport, I have to check the version I have but I'm pretty sure it's never been updated).

It is normal if the new map is getting close to being finalised and ready to install into the car (but not yet available) that the FSC code issued to the car with the previous map will give an update to the newer map when it is released. You will just have to source the new map when it is released.
