Having spent a lot of time in the US I understand your point! The reviewer calls the X3 a big car but also he calls it a mid-size SUV several times. To some in the US the X3 will be a small SUV....a small SUV in the UK would be a Nissan Juke.

For the UK and really all of Europe the current X3 is about big a car as is convenient. Our parking spaces are smaller than in the US, our car parks, town & village roads are much tighter than in the US. An X5, Q7 etc can be just that bit too wide to navigate easily between many residential gateposts. So for us, yes it's a relatively big car.
That makes perfect sense. I did drive a Peugeot 208 in Paris, 5spd of course.
