The rear tires are farther apart on the X4 giving it a wider track (stance) compared to the X3.

So there is more floor space for the spare tire on the X4.
While the X4 has a 1.2" wider rear track than the X3, both the X3 M and X4 M are listed at 63.9" front and 63.1" rear.
